I just bought 2 new books. One is called The Space Between Us written by Thrity Umrigar and The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I started the Umrigar book and was engaged right away, so that is exciting. We're in S. Carolina with Avery's soccer team. They've made it to the semi-finals in a regional meet with teams from Florida, Georgia, S. Carolina, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas. Storm is obviously representing Louisiana. They've never played better. Go Storm!

I think that's an excellent idea. I'm such a pack-rat, I actually have books that I saved from my children to pass on to my grandbabies. But a shelf of her own sounds like just the ticket.

I'm loving Three Cups of Tea, a non-fiction and inspiring tale of what happens when will meet compassion. One of the authors, Greg Mortenson, built schools (am may still be - I'm not finished the book) and other facilities in extremely remote areas of Pakistan during the 1990's. His story makes you believe that the world, and the people in it, is a wonderful place indeed.

Here's to a new year of reading. I'm almost finished with Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth. It's a real door stop and a bit uneven, but worth the time...especially since you can flip through the slow parts and not lose the story. Besides being an epic family saga about building a cathedral in the Middle Ages, it gives some insight into the building practices of the time period. If you read it, let me know what you think. I have two books in the pipe to read next, Three Cups of Tea and The Brief Wonderous Live of Ocsar Wao.

Once again I'm amazed at how much you are reading! I'm reading some professional stuff that would be of absolutely no interest to anyone but an English teacher nerd. Sorry, you don't qualify. Besides that, I'm reading a collection of poetry. The topic is the history of women's spiritual poetry. My scatter brain is just getting back from school (9:00pm-but I have to admit that I stopped at Ole Tyme Grocery for a shrimp poboy and a beer) and I can't remember the exact title or the author although she's quite famous. Miss you much. xxxooo Dixie

Boy you have been busy reading. I haven't updated my shelf, but I am reading Dawn by Elie Weisel. I love his writing, but you have to have a penchant for the dark side of humanity. The main character is a Zionist terrorist before Israel was created. It is also somewhat political if you are interested in how Israel came to be.

I read Liar's Club a long time ago and remember enjoying it. Now that summer is over, I'm having trouble finding time to do any personal reading. Which of the books on your shelf was your favorite?

I'm so pleased that you're on my "friends" list. I spent time this morning putting books on my bookshelf. I hope some of them are good recommendations. Right now I'm reading Prodigal Summer. It's very rich in characters, and the author Barbara Kingsolver draws connecctions between human relationships and "relationships" between animals from other species. It sounds wierd, but she's a masterful writer.
