Whenever someone asks me what my favorite book is, I always say this one. It is, for sure, my favorite non-fiction/memoir not only because the story is so endearing, but the writing style is fantastic, and Chris Chester is really quite brilliant. He backs up a lot of the story with interesting facts and perfect word choices. After reading it, I was compelled to do research on him...he was that intriguing as a writer and the story of his relationship between him and his pet bird was so beautiful. The story has stuck with me for a very long time. A truly lovely story with incredible writing...what else do you need? It will make you cry.

Like art, this book is best when you don't try to "get it" but just let it be. I love this book mostly because of the way it's written rather than what the story is about. It's really quite genius and stands alone, following it's own formula. Nothing compares, really...and that in itself says everything.

One of the best books of poetry I've read in a very long time.

I've read a lot of poetry books but there's something so unbelievably brilliant about David Berman's poetry that always brings me back to this book. If you want to know how to write modern poetry, study his words.
