St Clare just died and I'm bored to tears. Stowe does like to proselytize. I DO have every intention of finishing the book - just did my final 3 week renewal - but am having a bangup good time with a fantasy novel at the moment. I found one I'm actually enjoying; most fantasy is abysmal.

Anyhow, it sits on my end table waiting for me to pick it up again. I apologize. The fun of discussion dwindles with time spent waiting for responses.

Can you suggest a group for me? I like to read sociology type books. For example I am on my third book by Neil Postman about technology and some of the not-so-good effects from living a life in the age of INSTANT everything. In your prowling shelfari have you ever found a group that reads psychology and sociology? I found a history group but this does not fit...

You are so refreshing. Married life is a blast. My husband is gone quite a lot with the military and will be deploying next year, so I've delved into book and knitting groups in the area to keep me busy. Even though we are having a lot of firsts: first year in the military, first year of working, first year married, first year really truly away from home, I know we are starting off strong and Hawaii is like a dream come true even with work included. I've definitely grown soft skin here and I wear jeans when it's below 80, I don't know how I'll survive back home! Traveling sounds amazing, if I don't make it anywhere else I want to go to Italy where my family is from. My husband laughed when I said I wanted to name one of the cats Augustus so he lashed out and said he'd name the other George. Ha, I actually love that name for a cat. You must read your husband "The Naming of Cats" by T.S. Eliot!

Anyway, I divulge. At the moment I've just started Uncle Tom's Cabin and I'd like to finish what I started before I move on. I'll read what you all wrote about that and then if it suits I'll start Madame Bovary by Nov 1st like you said. Is it a pretty active group or do you feel you're talking to yourself sometimes? I remember having a few online classes at school and it was pulling teeth to get people to write comments. I always enjoyed my literature class and remember reading a lot of Faulkner, Morrison, Bronte etc. which I love, but please don't expect me to come up with some amazing character analysis hoooplaaa, remember I'm a nurse :) Any recommendations for other groups to join or ways to go about preparing to eventually teach my future children about the classics? (Aside, I loved the Scarlet Letter - call me crazy) Maybe your sister has a recommended reading list? I would love to be in her class :) I'm so new at this but I figure I have plenty of time to study up before the chil'en come along. On that, I better get working on grammar too. Thank you for your note, I appreciate it.

In my house? I wish! That's Eudora Welty's library and if you think it looks lovely, you should see the outside. http://noveldestinations.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/eudora-welty-house-exterior-blog.jpg

I visited the artists page where you got your avatar- what a wonderful way of looking at the world!

    Greetings CROAH member!

We are now accepting nominations for the next group read to cover the fourth US President, James Madison.

Please send your suggestions via one of 2 ways:

    a) a private note to either Regina or Dog Lover (this method reveals your email address to us), or

    b) use the "Questions About this Group" text box found on the member's tab. This sends an email to both administrators and masks your email address.

Please do NOT post your nomination to the site's discussion tab.

Please include the title, author, and brief description of the book. It would also be nice if you included the Shelfari book page URL.

Nominations will be accepted through the 18th. Nominations will be posted and voting will take place through the 25th. We will post the selected book on the 26th.

Because we are approaching the Holidays a revised schedule will be followed for the remainder of 2009 and beginning of 2010. We will vote for the Madison read in October, post discussion questions in November, skip December, vote on Monroe reads in January, and post discussion questions in February.

A suggestion has been made to continue the extended reading schedule past the Holidays and provide 2 months between book selections. We would be interested in hearing anyone's thoughts on this. Would it help you? Would you lose momentum? Are you too busy to participate on the current schedule.

Please post your comments on this proposed scheduling change to the nomination thread found at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/discussions/146618/James-Madison-Nominations-are-Open

The four books we've chosen since the group started have been fabulous. We look forward to seeing the nominations for the fifth.

    Thanks,

    Regina & DL

I think I'm the total opposite. Classics go a lot slower than contemporary books. Likewise non-fiction. Just finished my other book so I'm going to be getting Mysteries of Udolpho probably tomorrow afternoon. Woooo. Never watched Prison Break. Paid vacation is very nice. I think it'll be a year or two before I get an entire week of paid vacation...or that might just be for full-time people. I can't remember.

I haven't started the Mysteries of Udolpho; I'm reading a graphic novel, Beanworld and a Diana Wynne Jones book, The House of Many Ways. I don't know if I'm going to get to Udolpho simply because I like to be finished with the actual Austen book ahead of time and since it (Mysteries of Udolpho) is a pretty thick book, it might make that somewhat difficult. Maybe though. I've got about a hundred pages left of the Diana Wynne Jones book.

I love the sound of Inspector Montalbano. Must be good and have never heard of them.
And you'll have to review Foucoult's Pendulum. I'd like to read it eventually.

    Greetings CROAH members!

The nominations are in for the CROAH September group read about Thomas Jefferson.

You'll find the ballot at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/discussions/137240/Vote-for-Thomas-Jefferson-Reads---September-2009

    This is a "ballot" therefore...

    Please vote only once.

Please indicate only a vote "for" - do not vote against a title.

Please do not include any sales talk or justification for your vote - just "yae" or "for".

The last 3 reads have been just fabulous. With this range of nominations, it looks as though we'll have another winner for our 4th group read!

Thanks so much to all of you who submitted nominations - great job!

    Lookin' forward to your votes,

    DL

We think very highly of him (and his family). My daugther is just crazy about him. He seems to be so about her as well.

I have heard him sing. We attend the same congregation. He actually led singing tonight. He does have a great voice.
