Thanks for the invite! I went about 75 pages into Edgar Sawtelle and found that it just wasn't for me. I found it kind of depressing and I wasn't falling in love (or even like) with any of the characters. My mother has heard it's very good, wants to read it and has asked that I hang onto it for her. At least it will go to a good home.

I know what you mean about the "to read" pile. My home is overrun with books! I try not to waste too much time; if it's not doing it by page 50 or so, it's outta here. I HAVE to do that because I know another 5 or 10 books will be taking its place shortly. I was beginning to think I had a serious mental disorder until I found this site. Either I'm okay or there are ALOT of other people with my illness. I suspect I will like The Grapes of Wrath but can't commit to it just yet.

I'm now reading The Whiskey Rebels by David Liss. This is one I'll finish and probably keep. I was quite taken with his book, The Ethical Assassin. I don't think I'm going to like this one AS much but it has kept my attention from page one. I find I really enjoy the way he writes.

    Good luck! Keep me posted!

    Well Kate,

I'm sorry to admit I have decided to put Grapes to the side. It's back in my "plan to read" pile. I'll pick it up and start from the beginning when I'm in a different frame of mind. I was not able to maintain my focus and since I've heard it is a great book, I want to give it my all. In the interim, I'm reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.

Let me know how you make out with it........

OK. I feel better about moving slowly through the Grapes.

As for the Virgin Suicides, I tend not to mark my books but I have to admit I couldn't resist underlining or starring certain paragraphs, passages or ideas. I was that affected. I waited for what seemed like forever for him to write something else and then began to think he put every ounce of brilliance and genius into that one book and threw up his hands and said "That's all I've got!". I too liked Middlesex but it doesn't have any marks on the pages. I'm looking forward to whatever else he might have up his sleeve.

    Hi Kate,

I've been searching high and low on this site to find one other person who preferred The Virgin Suicides to Middlesex. Thanks for being that person! I feel validated! I fell in love with the book from the first paragraph. I've not seen the movie nor do I intend to.........I'd like to leave it the way it is. I came across your shelf as I was looking at those who are currently reading the same book I am. I'm not too far into The Grapes of Wrath yet and it has been a looooong time since I've read any Steinbeck. By now you may have finished it and moved on.

    Enjoy your book,

    Deb
