I just read two awesome novels by Vernor Vinge, both which won the Hugo awards and are loosely set in the same universe, they are "A Fire Upon the Deep" and "A Deepness in the Sky". I'm trying to get some friends to read them soon, but read up on them and see if it's you're type of thing. I loved both books. Too bad about the McDevitt one, it was allright, but I agree, not a true classic, but trust me on the Vinge books.
