I am a graduate student in biology and LOVE to read in my spare time! Unfortunately, my shelf is not very representative of all of the books I have read. I thought that going back and adding all of the books I have ever read was a little unrealistic so all the books on my shelf with a review are ones I have read since joining shelfari; the... more »

I just started The Orphan Master's Son also, however, I started this other book and it's taking me a while to get through it, Roger Williams and the Birth of the American Soul. The first half of the book (200 pages) was fact filled and so freakin' dry I was tempted to put it down. It took place mostly in England. But....now it has turned and has become absolutely fascinating. It seems Williams was the "one" who really started the concept, in this country anyway, of separating church from state. He doth protested too loud and got himself excommunicated/banished to outside the contracted colonies of Massachusetts. His stance: No church should dictate to its participants on the "first table of the commandments" namely, how, when and where they practice their faith. It should not be between man and man, but between man and his god. Williams was in full agreement that the "2nd table of commandments" should be enforced by church/goverment (which were one and the same in the colonies at the time.) Namely, murder, stealing, coveting - the big stuff.

I haven't finished one book yet. I also want to read The Orphan Master's Son.

    A few on my radar:
The Street Sweeper by Elliot Perlman
Hope: A Tragedy by Shalom Auslander
    The Crown by Nancy Bilyeau

    Hey Nicole,

Good to hear from you! And I think I can offer some recommendations. You're totally on the right track. The Orphan Master's Son blew me away! Already it's a contender for next year's top ten list. I'll be posting a review to PBT later today, and some awesome video of the author to my blog within the next 48 hours.

I haven't read American Dervish yet. (I've had the galley since last May!) But I've heard great things about it and hope to get to it soon. I think my other favorite of the new year is Hope: A Tragedy by Shalom Auslander. I have to warn you that is very Jewish--not in a religous sense, but in the world view of the main character. And it's dark, but very, very funny. Fantastic writing.

I think those are my top choices so far, for books that have already been released. There aren't that many yet. I'm hoping to upload a swarm of reviews later today. What a shock; I'm behind. I've been otherwise engaged of late. Anyway, I hope that helps. Happy reading!

They are both very fast reads, I hope you like them. JudithG also read and loved both - don't know if that helps but apparently I am her enabler too!

You can only get one book per month, at least right now. To see what's available now (about 5600 books) :

From your Kindle, go to the Kindle store. Click on See all Categories. In the drop down menu Kindle Owner's Lending Library is on the bottom. You can access the books there.

I haven't used it yet because I gave my Kindle3 to my daughter to take to college with her, she likes to read and since I knew I would get the newest Kindle and still could read on my iPad I was oaky without if=t for a few months.

The cost of Prime will probably be cheaper than your Netflix account, which I just cancelled. Once you have free shipping you may be surprised at how much more you use Amazon. Seriously they sell everything!

If you do try the lending let me know how it works out. I have been taking out so many books from the library and reading on my Kindle app, it's an illness - but free!

Im thinking about it. Im going to see if it's available in my library. I've been reading a lot of reviews on it and I think it will prove a good book - mostly am interested because Jobs cooperated with the book and so it probably will be interesting to hear it from the man himself.

I have 2 library cards, one for Palm Beach and one for Oceanside (I'm also planning on getting a NYC card since anyone who lives in NYS can get one) so if they both have the book I'll request it from both and maybe have a better chance of getting it. I'm trying not to buy too many books right now as I really want to try and clear my TBR.

Yes, memoirs can be tricky. I don't know if Grant was going through a true introspective exercise since he was nearing the end of his life but his are definitely an exception. You are probably wise in choosing a biography first. I should have mentioned the Mark Twain connection. We have all been fascinated by the connection between the early presidents and the literary greats. Pierce and Nathaniel Hawthorne, Irving Washington and Millard Fillmore, the connections are fascinating. Twain and Grant is another great pair. Hopefully, I can check out your review later tonight.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is one of three musuems hosting a special exhibit from the National Archives with original documents from the Civil War. I went to the preview event last week. The letter that Grant wrote recommending Sherman's promotion was among the items on display. How cool, huh? (more proof of my nerdiness). THere are three great lectures in November. I'm planning on hitting all three....yes...more proof. I don't know what the other two museums are. Of course, you being in DC, have constant access to that stuff :)

Welcome to the club! It's not such a bad place, I promise :)

First, I'm gald to hear you enjoyed Team of Rivals. I love all of her books and have heard her speak. I love to watch her on Meet the Press too! Grant is a fascinating character and an interesting study. Opinions about him have changed so much over time that depending on when the book was published you are going to get a very different perspective. Interestingly, Grant has probably the most read memoirs of any president. He wrote them as he was dying of cancer. I don't normally recommend reading memoirs. However, in Grant's case I do recommend Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. If you are wanting a biography I would recommend Grant by Jean Edward Smith. Smith is well respected as a historian on the Civil War era. So, I would say you had landed on a good choice. Grant was the first presidential biography I read. I was nine (talk about a nerd).

I've only read Andrew Johnson and Reconstruction by Eric McKitrick. It was ok but not something I would recommend. I will be interested to hear what you think of Stewart's work.

If you ever need a support group pop into our Chronological Read of American history. It is a small group but we have some good discussion.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Nicole,

Thanks for inquiring. I'm impressed with your Team of Rivals progress. My husband, who really likes history, tried it and couldn't make a dent. Washington is very good so far, but I'm only 5% of the way through its 900 pages! I actually think it is going to get better as we go as we are now in his very early life . . .now, I am starting to read about his military exploits, and that is picking up the pace for me. I do think Chernow is a very good writer, so my hopes are high. But I'm not a natural history lover, so it requires focus. Have you read Truman already by McCullough? I'm thinking you did for some reason (it's in the back of my memory). That was a book I truly enjoyed . . .I hope Washington becomes similarly engaging.

Funny you should ask, Nicole. I read it the other day. I've been a little blocked trying to get my reviews out lately, but I'll try to post a review of that book tomorrow. Short response, I liked it very much. I did not love it the way others have. Possibly that is because I did not know what a shortstop was while reading it, LOL.

Ah, I know what you mean, I can only handle paranormal YA a bit at a time but I have read Shiver & Linger and the Uglies series too. They were okay but so far my fave still being Hunger Games tho that's probably not paranormal? Um, the Uglies must be dystopian too rather than paranormal? Anyway... I really think it's time for the rest of the world to move on too, lol.

Thanks for the offer (Nora Roberts) but I can only read romance books once in a while I just read one of hers for ttim last month and I probably have read most of her books before I joined Shelfari which therefore, probably didn't make it onto my shelf because I can't remember which is which, ha ha ha...
