Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr. (July 10, 1943 – February 6, 1993) was a professional tennis player, born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. During his career, he won three Grand Slam titles, putting him among the best ever from the U.S.
In 1988, Ashe discovered he had contracted HIV during a blood transfusion.

During his battle with AIDS, one of his fans asked, "Why does God have to select you for such a bad disease?" Ashe replied, "The world over — 50,000,000 children start playing tennis, 5,000,000 learn to play tennis, 500,000 learn professional tennis, 50,000 come to the circuit, 5,000 reach the Grand Slam, 50 reach Wimbledon, 4 to the semifinals, 2 to the finals. When I was holding a cup, I never asked God 'Why me?' And today in pain I should not be asking God, 'Why me?'

There was a monk sitting by the side of the road, his legs crossed and his hands folded in his lap. A warrior went to him asked in a demanding way: "tell me about your hell and heaven". The monk opened his eyes and looked up: "you who are so unkempt, whose breath is foul and hair is uncombed, whose sword is rusty and neglected and whose mother dresses funny, you would ask me of hell and heaven?"

The warrior's face turned crimson as he drew his sword out of the sheath to severe the monk's head from its shoulders.

"That's hell" said the monk gently.

The warrior stopped his sword in mid-flight and in a fraction of a second he was overcome with awe and compassion and love for this gentle being who had dared to risk his very life to give him such a teaching. He descended the sword, his eyes filled with grateful tears.

"And that" said the monk " is heaven"

recommend: Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler... the heroine "wakes up to find that she's gone backwards in time, to the England Austen chronicled in her books... With no explanation as to how or why she's been transplanted.

Hello dear member of the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group! It's J., the admin., and I'm writing to inform you of the group's new look! (And it goes beyond the change in our group picture, though it is nice, don't you agree?) :) What we're discussing now: Patricia Hill Collins' Black Feminist Thought, Toni Morrison's Sula for our July read, our little BIG Read: 7 short stories in 7 days to begin later this month, the National Black Arts Festival where Alice Walker and Pearl Cleage are featured speakers, and more!

We'll soon have a group blog up and running, will begin profiling the uberly dynamic authors within our own group, discussing women's/girls action coalitions in your city, reviving some of our good ol' threads, etc.

I challenge everyone to invite at least one friend (already a member of shelfari or otherwise) to join the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group and to log in at least bi-weekly. (Though weekly would be wonderful!) And I pledge to do the same.

And did you know that Toni Morrison's new novel, A Mercy, is due to be released in November? Ah, you would if you'd visited our group page! (No, actually, I haven't posted this information. lol) But do stop by and fall into the purple haze that is extraordinary literature by feminists of color!

    Love, Jaya

I'm stuck on Jazz, yet willing to pick it back up and try Sula. Jazz is fictionalized too me in the Harlem Renaissance. Sula's another love affair based in friendship so it seems.
