Another great find from shelfari members!!! This book is like Bukoski meets Selby. Is it poetry...Is it short stories....so far Nazi kids from San Fran in the 1980's, cancer patients, drug addicts, a guilty terrorist...prostitutes...Basically good stuff. This guy can create an entire canvas in one short paragraph. I can't wait to read more from Vollman.

  • A Hunger Artist (Short Prose of Franz Kafka Series)
    • Rated 4 stars

Seemed more like Camus, than the Kafka I know, neverthless, A small book with a few worthy short stories. A hunger artist who starves himself for art, but very few if any truly appreciate his trade. Another story of a tight rope artist who only feels good when he is up in the air, and consequently tries to spend most of his life up in the air.

Not necessarily my genre, but immensly interesting. Kept me reading. Soon developed many overlapping subplots. Able to skip back and forth in time in a believable fashion. Can a Nazi seek redemption? Can a Nazi be forgiven, by himself, family, community, and ultimately God?

  • Land of the Lost Souls: My Life on the Streets

A wonderful book that trancends mental illness and substance abuse and shows you the life of a wonderful soul who is so guilty of his own failures that he has chosen to be homeless in NYC. Well written, brutal and beautiful...a must read...

A great read, especially for readers who can relate to the NYC/Brooklynesque vibe.

  • The New York Trilogy
    • Rated 2 stars

Maybe crime fiction isn't my thing, but I thought Auster lost his way in this trilogy. I had no connection with the characters, nor did I care about their outcomes, nevertheless I read every page in the hope of finding something of value. Oh well, Read Austers TIMBUKTO or BROOKLYN FOLLIES. These are very worthy reads.

Written in the genre of Tolstoys life of a horse, Auster writes an amazing story from the dog's perspective, a very intelligent dog. If you are an animal lover this book will make you laugh and cry. A great read.

Read this garbage if you want to get in the mind of a neo nazi terrorist. I learned about this book working for Anti Defamation League. Apparantly the skinheads, nazi's, and other creeps worship this book. For that alone it is worth the read.

This is Gogol at his best. A wonderful story about a warrior. Plenty of old fashioned violence. Still pertinent and a staple in classical literature.
