I'm a lover of all things French - literature, history, travel, food, wine. I've been re-reading in English some of the classics of French literature that I read originally (in French) as a student, and finding them richer now that I'm older and have had more life experience. I also have works on my shelf by contemporary French authors I'm... more »

    Ah okay, i see.
Well yes i don't read a lot of fiction, but if you look novel set in Turkey, there is a book ""Les desenchantees"" by a french author Pierre Loti. I haven't read the book but what is interesting is the story of it's making: Loti met 3 veiled women in Turkey saying they're from the harem of the sultan. After Loti died, one of these women published another french book: "Le secret des desenchantees". I won't spoil the story though :D
Personnally, i think the Turcs neglected the other parts of their empire.

I love it that you are a librarian. I majored in comparative lit in college, but am a banker by profession. Can we be friends? I 'd be so grateful for your recommendations in reading. I feel that a lifetime is not enough to read all that I want to read and re read. Therefore, I hate wasting money and time on books that turn out to be dispensable.

Her name is Irene Y, in her bio she says that she her mother and her baby brother arrived at Ellis Island in Nov 1951, they are from Germany. Her mother's story is amzaing. And the surprising part, she is from Saratoga Springs! You may want to consider adding her to your friends, she has read so many great books. I hope your trip was everything you wanted it to be. See you soon at the library.

Suzanne, Looked for you but Michelle helped me with blog. Just read The weight of silence. Explores family dynamics. and the consequences of keeping silent to keep the peace which often leads to tragic results. Suspenseful and redeeming as well.

If you didn't like the Dragon tattoo you'll have a hard time with the second one. They aren't necessarily easy to get into...you have to read a lot just to get all the background, but for me the payoff was satisfying. The second book is a little slower, then the third starts slow but fills in so many gaps in your understanding of Lisbeth that it's all very interesting. I personally love the series.

I haven't read Lee Child yet, but he's on my list because you love him so much! I also really want to read that book by the writer who works in the juvenile facility. I've added it to my list too. I haven't read Peter Cameron yet, but Someday this pain...is on my list too. Sigh, too much on my list! I decided I needed an adult book since I'm reading so much YA now, so I'm reading Black Like Me by ...Griffin. It's incredible. I'm really enjoying it. Now that I think about it, it might be a good companion book to The Help, which I haven't started yet. Did I tell you how much I loved Carter Finally Gets It by Brent Crawford and his second book, Carter's Big Break just came out and I loved it too. And he just responded to an email from me inviting him to come visit the library and said he wants to come! Yay! He's my latest author crush and you can see why here: http://www.brent-crawford.com/blog/Welcome.html. I'm not sure if you would like the books though - they are very teen boy (perhaps the opposite of French literature and film?!). But hysterically funny. I'm planning to be in Albany the weekend of July 10 for a friend's wedding. I was wondering if you will be around that Sunday morning to get together? Did you get my save-the-date email? Talk soon, love Pink

Dressed in Fiction looks interesting although maybe you have to be reading a lot of those novels to be attuned to it.

If you go by what I've been reading lately, there don't seem to be many grown-up books in the mix, although both my book clubs tend to read grown up stuff. The next book for my standard book club is The Help--I know you've read that one. It looks interesting. My other book club is called Gay Reads (membership is comprised of 5-6 gay men and me). We are reading I am not Myself These Days by Josh Kilmer-Purcell. Don't know much about it, but I want them to read the YA Almost Perfect next. I've been listening to a lot of stuff in my car during my commute. I think as I get a large enough list of titles that I can recommend to teens, that I'll be able to slow down the YA reading a bit to make room for some adult books again. I'm just reading like a maniac now to try to get up to speed (interspersed with comics for relief). My favorite read of late is The Hunger Games--it's been super popular with the teens and I was a little skeptical, but I absolutely loved it. I visit the juvenile detention center once a month to read with the teens there and today I learned that a few of them are really into the Lee Childs books that you like.

Yeah, the Leif Enger was for my book club. I never would have finished it otherwise. I might have given it halfway, but probably wouldn't have even gone that far. I'm guessing that no one else in the group will have read it, except for the woman who chose it who received two, I repeat, TWO copies for Christmas.
Did I tell you my big news? I got a new job. I'm a public librarian now! Teen Services Librarian at Lawrence Public Library (in Kansas). I've been at it about 6 weeks now and it was very stressful to start with (as new jobs are) but I am finally settling in and feeling good about it. The public library environment is so great to be in. Yay!

I am trying to learn to speak French, since 2005. I've gone to Nice to Immerse myself. An exercise in futility? I haven't given up. Are there any books similar to Foreign tongue? you would recommend that might help me in my neverending quest to learn French. Please check my book shelf. I have all sorts of French text books. Thank you for your help and your time.

What a coincidence--I meant to ask you yesterday if you had read Lark and Termite (but didn't get a chance). Now I see you're currently reading it. What do you think of it? I've had it checked out for awhile, but can't seem to get into the first chapter...

Yowza! Your Proust quote of the week makes me feel strangely empty and disconnected. I think I'll go eat a chocolate croissant with my colleague.

Oh that does sound divine. I'm going to have to review your shelves again. My tbr list on my laptop has been lost forever when my hard drive died. =/ Now I must start afresh and THIS time I'm going to print a hard copy of my list. (as though the books on my shelf aren't good enough) I'm in the middle of packing the household to move across country and I still have more books to pack! (chuckling to myself) I think I have a book attraction) But hey it could be worse right, I could like something as silly as shoes. I don't gain any knowledge through shoes.
How long have you been a librarian? Do a lot of people come to you asking what they should read next or do you find most people know what they enjoy? I have a friend that reads books based on what her friends recommend to her. I guess it's better than not reading at all. =)
(sigh) well I better go pack some books. My dh and ds are busy at work and I'm starting to feel guilty for being on the computer. Oh yes, another quick question; do you work in the kids section of your library? Do you notice children struggle with the transition from beginning readers to the black and white readers?

Hi, Suzanne. There is a book titled "How to Be French" that I bought quite a while ago at the Book House but haven't read yet. It's kind of a lark - I'll let you know what I think about it!
