I'm a lover of all things French - literature, history, travel, food, wine. I've been re-reading in English some of the classics of French literature that I read originally (in French) as a student, and finding them richer now that I'm older and have had more life experience. I also have works on my shelf by contemporary French authors I'm... more »

I really appreciate your suggestions and feedback.
Very much like you, I like to feed my mind much more than just read for entertainment, unless the book is so intriguing it makes me want to do more research. Is that sick? LOL I probably won't be able to wait until Christmas to get it. :D
In the future please feel free to tell me about more great books.

Oh! Have you ever read The Essence of Style: How the French Invented High Fashion, Fine Food, Chic Cafes, Style, Sophistication, and Glamour by Joan DeJean?
It's such a terribly long title and seemed to me a bit snobby, but was still interesting. Not great, but interesting.

    Oh yummy!!!!
Thank you for the three books. They all look really tantalizing and if I am patient I will request them for Christmas. Otherwise I may have to buy them for myself. ;-)
Which one did you enjoy the most?

Suzanne, I'm returning to France in April!! Karen Watkins and I signed onto a 13 day riverboat cruise on the Seine from Paris to Normandy. Rhona Forman (formerly a librararian at Saratoga is the coordinator) working with Grand Circle Travel. Many of the participants are from this area Schenectady, Burnt Hills, Saratoga. We will be traveling on the M/S Bizet and are scheduled to depart Albany on April 6. If you check out the Grand Circle website www.gct.com you can do a virtual tour of the boat which will be our hotel for the entire trip. Most of our meals are included. The only duplication for me will be Versailles and Giverny (Monet's home & garden). Karen and I are both excited about this planned adventure. My September calendar is totally full. Any chance our little group can get together at my house on an October Sunday? I thought I would ask you for your available dates and then email everyone else. Enjoy the upcoming holiday weekend. My son and his family will be visiting along with my daughter Carrie, baby Jacob and Jim. I look forward to hearing from you. Carol

I suspect it will be a long engagement because thinking about a wedding stresses me out. I decided not to take the dresser from Josh. I have two dressers in the cottage in Vermont that I can bring out here whenever I am ready. If you and Hannah go out to visit in Colorado, let me know, because I would love to visit there too. It's a longer way, but Jason and I could make a vacation of it -- he gave me a tent for my birthday! Christmas is probably going to be at Mom's house. I tried to have it in KC last year and Ben made a big stink about how he wanted to go back to Vermont to visit friends. So, I don't know if we can convince anyone of Albany. Jason is coming with me this year and I'd like him to see Vermont.

I knew that rating would get a response from you! I listened to The Girl of His Dreams on CD and I had the distinct sense that I came in in the middle of the story and that maybe I would care more about these characters if I had started with the first book and worked my way along. Being plunked down in the middle of their lives, I had trouble mustering any interest. Honestly, I just don't care what vegetables they choose to put in the pasta that they are planning to eat tonight. I guess I feel there wasn't enough of anything--I can see how the characters would be interesting, but she only gives you tiny snippets of them here and there and then skips away to give you tiny snippets of an incredilbly boring story. It's all so noncommittal.

I had to return the Guernsey Literary etc. today because the library finally billed me for it! (I am the worst library patron.) I didn't finish it, but mainly because I procrastinated and then got distracted. I may go back to it. My reading club is terrible at finishing books (usually only one or two of us finish) but this time, I was the only one who didn't finish it. The other women really enjoyed it. Some said it was their favorite that we've read. It definitely generated the most conversation of all our books. I brought up the collaboration issue, but the women felt that since she didn't help, that wasn't an issue. Not having read most of the book, I didn't have much to say. ;-) We are reading Bright Shiny Morning next (ugh, it's long!). Fieldwork is on my list.

Right now I am not reading at all because all my spare time is spent frantically knitting a baby sweater for a shower this Saturday. Did Hannah tell you my news? Jason and I got engaged (while we were at the family reunion). No wedding plans yet.

Suzanne, I received your postcard just before I left for Maine. What a surprise! I'm back from Maine and am trying to weed through my 79 emails. I just learned about a trip to France in April 2010 being coordinated by a former librarian, Rhona, at Saratoga Springs Library. It is an 11-day river cruise originating Paris and traveling north to Giverny, Auvers, Roven, Normandy Beaches, Honfleur... There is an optional 3 day post trip in Paris as well. An informational meeting is sked for 8/17, and I plan to go. The trip is coordinated by Grand Circle Travel. I was so busy with my family on vacation that I did very little reading. I recently saw the coming attractions to the movie "Julie & Julia" and it looks wonderful. Can't wait to see it. I'll be sending out an email regarding a get together in August. Cheers, Carol

Hi Suzanne, I'm amazed at your list of books you have read. I do have 2 you suggested "Out Stealing Horeses" and "Stealing Buddha's Dinner" in my vacation book bag. I'm meeting my kids in Maine for one week starting on Sat. 7/18. I've just finished reading 2 books--"How You See Him" by Eli Gottlieb, a psychological fiction and "Perfectly Imperfect" by Lee Woodruff, the wife of Bob Woodruff, the ABC newsman that was injured in Iraq. Her non-fiction book is a compendium of essays on family life. I loved it! At the moment, I'm reading "My Life in France" by Julia Childs; it is a delightful read. Thanks for including me on Shelfari. Happy Summer that is finally here! Carol R.

    Hi, Suzanne,
I just read your first message the morning I was leaving to visit kids in NYC -- just back last night. Will love picking up your current reads. I've been disappointed that none of the books I wrote done at your house are on the shelves at the Schenectady Library, but next step is to ask for inter-library loan. Just a little preoccupied at the moment - baby shower for Nicole is next weekend and I'm still finalizing the guest list and caterer #s and $s!

I am having a ball, though, following the Staff Picks of Jim at the Niskayuna Library - he goes in for international detective stories and has introduced me to Andrea Camilleri and Fred Vargas - and now a Dutch writer, Janwillem van de Wetering.
Books on tape I've really enjoyed The Practice of Deceit by Elizabeth Benedict and another, whose black author I can't recall, pub 2008 - Conception.

    Thanks for including me.

Hello Suzanne, I really enjoyed Dinner with Buddha. My daughter-in-law left Japan to come to NYC to live on her own. Very brave but spoke the language since she was an adult. She managed to find a job, friends and a husband who adores her. See you Wednesday. Clare

    Suzanne,
I just wanted to let you know I finished The Help last night and Wow! It's a great book. The main characters are really interesting and the bad characters are spiteful. I think this book will spark a lot of discussion for both of my book clubs. (I mentioned it at my neighborhood book club last night even though I hadn't finished it yet, and they chose to add it to our Sept meeting.)

Thank you so much Suzanne for the url's. Our group has chosen The Help. One of the members is already reading it. (she got a box of books from her dd who works for a publishing company in NY) She's a lucky woman. ;-)
I will definitely post about the book when we're done and hopefully we'll have a lively discussion about it as well.
Did you see my post about Fire in the Blood? This is my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. Short, easy, but powerful and very thought provoking. I've read reviews that it isn't nearly as good as one of her other books, but I can't remember the name; Suite Francaise or something? I'm probably slaughtering it and I'm too much in a hurry to look it up now.
    Thanks again!

Well, funny thing, with Twilight, we spent more time talking about the book than we usually do! Our next book is A Mercy by Toni Morrison, so we're running the full literary range!

Well, I finally finished a book! I really liked Deaf Sentence. It reminded me of my Dad. I think I'll read some more David Lodge. I don't mind that my book club doesn't read "serious" books. They are all lawyers with really stressful jobs and they want to read something that lets them escape. The social aspect of the club is really important--we spend as much time talking about our lives as the book (ok, more). I just wonder sometimes why we bother with a book at all. The book varies, I guess. It just depends on who chooses it.
