Ya know, I think Crystal has you confused with JoEllen. Reading JoEllen's blog it sounds like "From the Mississippi Delta" by Endesha Ida Mae Holland.

The diving bell analogy just blew me away! It was perfect for his situation. And how smart are his caregivers to recognize a pattern and translate it into text?!? This is one of those five tissue books.

That reminds me, it is Friday and I haven't started a book. I better get to reading! :)

My comment about watching the Japanese version was mostly a joke. In my blog, I'm often reviewing foreign movies--Japanese, Indian, German. Korean, Vietnamese, etc. People ask if I ever watch American films (yes, and even occassionally review them). Of course, I'd have to have the english subtitle version for the Japanese film.

I read Tinker Creek 20 years ago, while hiking the Appalachian Trail. The book helped me see the trail in a different way. To know a bit more about Dillard, you might read "An American Childhood." She grew up in Pittsburgh and her family owns American Standard (the toilet people)... My guess (from when she was growing up in Pgh, is that she must be in her late 50s or early 60s. You might also like "A Writing Life"

I have only recently read your blog--your recent book reviews. I have never thought of the PCUSA as exotic, but then being raised in the old Southern Church and still wtih the PCUSA, maybe it's just seems like home--with all our battles and all.

I think I was in the 9th grade when I first went to Montreat, I know what you mean about the wind blowing through the trees. Montreat was where I fell in love with the mountains--rockhopping in the creek that flows into Lake Susan and climbing the hills around the village was a new experience for a kid who grew up on salt water. It's interesting about you being a Southern Baptist PK... I'll have to go back into your blog and read your story.

You'd asked about my reading of Ferrol Sams, I think I've seven of his books including his trilogy. I know he has a recent book that just been released that I haven't read. I loved "Run with the Horses!"

Summers at Montreat? Wow, brings back memories of Youth Conferences there when I was a child and I've been back a couple of times as an adult. It is a special place.

If I remember right, Maggie and I joined Shelfari at the invitation of the same person who doesn't use it anymore... I've put up about 3/4 of my library and as I read new books have tried to put up reviews. As you've seen, most of the reviews are first posted in my blog.

Hey, we are shelfari buddies now! I'm thrilled you are getting into this and I hope it is adding to your summmer. We are having a lot of fun taking Faulkner around. Yesterday we explored a little of the swamp past Tunica and came face 2 face with a water moccasin! Agh!
