“I have been very aware of Louise Erdrich's name, but have never read her before. What took me so long?
This book felt like a story song a la Harry Chapin. It wove a story where parts seemed familiar (refrain) but the parts that moved the story along were new and fresh to be savored, yet gulped. I wanted to know what happened; I wanted it to last forever.
One memorable line toward the end of the book I have experienced. I had never come across someone expressing it before. It referred to the 13-year-old narrator's parents as "disguised as old people". Love it.
The tangled web she wove wins Louise Erdrich a rare five-star rating from me. Now, what else has she written?”
