Oh! Just one more note. I saw that Good Omens is on your "plan to read" shelf. It's an amazing book, and I recommend to everyone no matter what type of books they read. I suppose that was my first introduction to both Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman who are my two most favorite authors. I will read anything that either of them publishes.

Hi Jaede! O.k. to answer your inquiries: I would highly recommend the discworld novels, no it is not necessary to start from the beginning, and I think Guards! Guards! is a perfect place to start. I could talk at length about why Terry Pratchett is so brilliant, but I won't bore you. I will say that the Discworld is more or less set up into sets of characters, and chronology (while perhaps helpful) is not necessary (except in one or two specific cases). Guards! Guards! happens to be (chronologically) the first in the Discworld to feature my favorite set of characters, the city watch. My introduction to the discworld was with Night Watch, which is way way down the road as far as publishing date, but it didn't diminish the book. I was hooked from then. I have gone back and read the watch books in order simply because I love those characters so much, and you do get to grow with them as they journey through their odd and wonderful lives. But each book stands alone.

Not every discworld novel is a masterpeice, but I haven't found one yet that did not hold my attention til the end, or didn't in some way make me love the characters.

My other favorite characters are the Nac Mac Feegle with Tiffany Aching, and Moist Von Lipwig. They are hysterically funny with great not-so-subtle social commentary. Really brilliant stuff. I hope you enjoy it. If you like it let me know. I'd be happy to suggest another one. Sorry for the novel.

Hi Jaede, welcome to Play Book Tag! I just want to let you know the activities that PBT currently has going on so that you can jump in and get involved! Firstly, every month a member picks a random tag from the top 200 Shelfari tags, July's tag is fairy tales. The members then read books that have this tag (or if you just think it fits in the genre that's good enough for us, we're not too picky) and posts short reviews of them on the discussion entitled July tag: our collective reads for our shelf. From there, intelligent conversation abounds...at the very least, interesting conversation abounds :) We are coming to the end of the month and August's tag will be announced on the 27th. If you are interested in getting in a fairy tale, there are lots of really cute children's books that qualify...perhaps a bedtime story for your 2.5 year old?!?

Second, we have a new game that started July 1: Tag it to the Max. This game is a bit more complicated but the general idea is that againstthetide(one of the admins) will randomly assign you a starting tag from the top 200 Shelfari tags. Then, you would work your way consecutively through the list, reading one book per tag and earning points for them as well as reviews. If you are interested, check out the full rules listed under the discussion Rules for Tag it to the Max. You can then sign up under the discussion Sign up for Tag it to the Max. This game has been underway for a couple of weeks thus far but is running through August so you still have plenty of time!

Answers to other commonly asked questions, as well as rules for some fun get-to-know-you games we often play can be found on the thread FAQ for new members. Also, you can always ask me or anyone of our helpful admins any questions that you may have!

I noticed that we both like Patricia Cornwell books! I haven't read her last couple of books but I plan on getting to them eventually. PBT has allowed me to break out of my pattern of only reading a couple of authors and expand my reading horizons! I have never read James Patterson but hear good things about his books. Do you have a favorite of his that you would recommend starting with?

    See you on PBT!

    Happy reading,
    Nicole

Thanks I was curious about the movie so I like to know if there based off books. Sometimes watching the movie before reading the book kills the experience and visa verca.

Vampires, Witches & Were’s all that
would like to invite you to participate in the ABC contest starting on July 1, 2008.
I will post a thread that has the letters of the ABC's list, then start your own thread for example mine would be Sherry's ABC's and list the books that you read with those letters has the first letter in any title of book, it doesn't have to be in the genre either. Each person will be responsible for sending me their points via the group email at vampireswitchesweresallthat@yahoo.com. For every book you read during the time period (until the next letters are posted) you will receive 10 points in the email you must list the title, author, and pages so that if there is tie, we will use page count to break the tie. Everyone is eligible to win, even admin's as a third party will be keeping track of the points for me...so post the books you read...I will post the first letters on July 1.

    As always happy reading..
Show me the books he loves and I shall know the man
far better than through mortal friends.
