Let me know what you think of "Fight Club." I rad it after seeing the movie and thought the movie did an amazing job of capturing the essence of the novel. A rarity. Seeing your notes below, I'll weigh in about "The Hunger Games" movie: I thought it was true to the action of the book at teh expense of the emotion and thoughts of the book. I thought the book was okay, without much of a message. If someone hadn't read the book, I thought the movie would have been really shallow. Hope all is well with you.
Jeff
Yes! You really have to see THG to find out what makes Josh Hutcherson so cute! Like you, as was skeptical prior the seeing the movie. I'm not anymore!
Omg, really!? That's great that you're thinking of continuing your master's in Toronto!! I did a little research on the Internet for you, but unfortunately couldn't find anything worth sharing on the subject. My best advice to you would be to call the university you're interested in and ask them to send you a list of credentials. Oh wait. Do you mean you want do your Ph.D. in Toronto or do you plan on continuing your masters elsewhere? I'm a little confuse... All I know is that a friend of mine had to take some extra courses to be able to teach French to English students (in Ontario) due to the fact that she obtained her B.Ed (teaching degree) in another province (Alberta).
I'm looking for a job right now. I had to take a break from doing that because of what happened with my mom for the last couple of months, but now I'm slowly getting back on track! I'd love a job in research tough...
Hi! I'm doing fine... actually, things couldn't be better at the moment! My mom is now completely healed so that's obviously a huge relief! Now we're just taking things slow and enjoying ourselves... I'm also taking a break from Facebook; I've got a lot more free time now lol! By the way, we went to see The Hunger Games last Friday :) Did you get to see it as well? I LOVED it. One of the best book-to-movie adaptations I've ever seen, hands down! And what an amazing cast (Josh Hutcherson is so cute and charming and fit the role of Peeta perfectly)!
Oh yes, Rebecca is on my TBR list too! Let me know your thoughts on that one... it sounds really good! For my part, I've read a lot of good books recently, but here's the ones that stood out the most to me: Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky, If I Stay & Where She Went, both by Gayle Forman. And of course, there's Divergent by Veronica Roth... I'll have to reread this one soon because the sequel, Insurgent, is coming out May 1rst (same release date as Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore). Guess what I'll be doing that day lol! Anyway, I'm glad you're doing okay! :)
Hey! Long time no talk... :( How are you? Read anything good lately?
Thanks for your support. I greatly appreciate it!
Yep, you have a good memory. I’ve moved from Quebec to Ontario a couple of years ago. I found a map that might help you locate Quebec’s tourist regions: http://www.bonjourquebec.com/qc-en/regions0.html
If you love to go shopping, then I would suggest a trip to Montréal (situated in the region of Montérégie). There’s also a lot of museums (Science Centre, Botanical Garden, Biodôme, ...) and fun activities to do: La Ronde (Québec’s largest amusement park), Bell Centre (to see a show/concert), Cirque du Soleil, Casino, etc.
I would also recommend the Outaouais region (English and French are the 2 main spoken languages there because it’s located on the border of Ontario and Quebec) there’s the Montcascades waterpark, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, etc.
If you plan on going to Quebec in the Winter and if you love skiing, then the Laurentides is definitely the place to visit (especially the Parc national du Mont-Tremblant and Saint-Sauveur).
Finally, if you prefer water activities and the ocean view in the summertime, then the regions of Charlevoix (beautiful sights), Manicouagan (Tadoussac and Grandes-Bergeronnes is where you can see belugas and whales) and Gaspésie (I hear it’s beautiful out there, and that’s where the famed Rocher Percé is located) would suit you best.
Hope that helps! :)
Unconquearable queen of the night!
I love your shelf and appreciate the fact that you review so many of your books. I am also in education, and have been my entire career. I'll definitely check back to your shelf when I am ready to choose my next read.
Based on your likes, I'd highly recommedn Murakami. I think you'd love him.
If you're ever in Santa Monica and want a tour of a great independent school...
Pura vida,
Jeff
Thanks! Well that was the problem I think; I like theory and research much more than I like practice (teaching). Oh well at least I know that now.
Um, no, my mom's actually not alright... we recently learned that she has cancer. The doctor said she has a good chance of recovery so we try to stay positive but it's not always easy.
I was born there, so of course I'm familiar with the province of Quebec. You can ask me anything you want. Where in QC would you like to go?
Wow that's cool, good for you! I wish I go could travel too. I just don't have the time right now... I quit Teacher's College (I didn't like it as much as I had hoped) so I've applied to jobs at the university, while at the same time, I'm taking care of my mom.
Quebec... do you mean the province or the city?
Hi Rupa! How are you? What have you been up to these days? Hope all is well with you! :)
OMG it is!! It's sooo good. A bit creepy at times, but the suspense and the romance keep me turning the pages well into the night - yet not fast enough - haha. I'm almost done reading it and I can't wait to know how the story will unfold in the end!! I definitely recommend it!
Hello. i am Krysti! if u love vampires and love to read about vampires check out my group!! http://www.shelfari.com/groups/84817/about
Yes, elementary school consists of grades 1-6 in Ontario, although a lot of schools now combine middle and elementary, so grades 1-8. I’d love to do Teaching Observation in a 6th grade class in my old school, too! That would be so cool. I’m glad to know you loved your experience! :) I’ll have to do 3 days of ’’observation’’ before starting my first internship in November (for a month) and then I’ll have a second internship (for about a month and a half) next Spring. That’s all the info I have right now. I really hope they’ll allow me to do sixth grade for one of the internships! Yeah, I know all about the waiting part... after 5-6 years of university, I’ll FINALLY get the opportunity to move from theory to practice lol! Hopefully all this studying will pay off!
Btw, did you know that a new version of Jane Eyre will come out next week (August 16th)? I can’t wait to buy the DVD... I still haven’t seen it but it looks pretty good! Plus, I’m kind of curious to see Michael Fassbender taking on the role of Rochester! :)
That's cool! I'd like to become an Elementary teacher (I'd especially love to teach first or sixth grade). I can't wait to start my first internship in November! :)
So glad to hear from you! I wish you all the best with your studies. I know how it can be very stressful but it’ll be all worth it in the end, you’ll see!
Yes, I’ve completed my masters degree in December and I thought I’d be done with school (well unless I decide to undertake doctoral studies one day) but guess what? I’m going back to school in the Fall for a year to become a teacher. I loved my studies in education so much, I ended up wanting to teach! lol Anyway, I’m planning to read as many books as I can too before I’m once again swamped with school work.
As for Divergent, yesss!! Summit Entertainment has actually acquired the movie rights BEFORE the book was even out (http://hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2011/05/03/divergent-veronica-roth-interview/). And the author was only 22 when she wrote it... crazy, right?!
Hi! Long time no talk... How are you? How's school?
I've been busy lately reading mostly YA books and guess what?? I think I've finally found a book that's even better than the Hunger Games!! Can you believe it haha!? I'm telling you, it's that good (well at least I think it is... I'll have to read HG again soon to compare), it's called Divergent by Veronica Roth (first book of a planned trilogy). Anyway, I had to tell you! I think you'll like it too, since it's a dystopian novel just like the HG. :)
I def. know what you mean! Master's degree = no time to read books that aren't school related. But hang in there! It'll be so worth it in the end!
And yeah, that's a good idea; it'll also be one my resolutions! :) Talk to you again soon.
Hey! Just wanted to let you know that I'm finally back and also to wish you a happy New Year! :)
I received you question about reading T.R.R. Tolkien's "Silmarillion". The answer was either Yes Or No, but the answer is not so clear cut. The book is a collection of totally narrative tales prior to Lord of the Rings and is very long, complex and hard reading. However, if you like upper high literary fiction, you might enjoy it. If you want a flowing continuous story, then I wouldn't recommend it. LOTR is more enjoyable.
