I like it quite a bit. It's tight in terms of chraracterization' descriptive and evocative. One of Rushdie's best collection. There's a flow within the stories, as each links to the next. Do you plan to read it or have read it already?

Hi Thomas - thanks for your comments re my taste, it's much appreciated. Well, it would be more apt to say it USED to be good taste. Now, life seems to have caught up and become so frantically busy that I almost feel like a different person. So when you mentioned Jude the Obscure, I felt nostalgic - and since you're planning to read it soon, I think I will follow suit and borrow it from the library to read it again. Thank you for giving me the impetus. I think I have to re-read almost everything on my shelf.

As to whether Hardy is an "accessible" author - oh yes, for me definitely. The language, from what I can remember, is not difficult at all; just maybe that there are some passages which may feel "long drawn" and slow for people of this fast paced era. But it is exactly that which gives a Hardy book its unique character. One needs to take one's time to read these novels to savour them properly. Jude: well, I don't want to spoil it for you by saying anything about it, but be warned, it may leave you with a pain in your heart.

Hi Thomas - yes, I have read Dickens (Hard Times, Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities and of course, David Copperfield); but it was such a long time ago. I simply love his writing and would love to read these books again. Must make time to do so, we get so caught up with other, more mundane, things.
Also watched (about a year ago) the BBC TV rendition of "Bleak House" with Charles Dance. Chilling.
