I'm 54, live in Annapolis, MD, and work for the Department of Defense. With regard to my reading, I'm omnivorous, and I'll give most anything a shot, although I do have my preferred genres and authors within those genres. I'm most often drawn to horror, historical fiction, murder mysteries/police procedurals, military history, and some sci-fi....more »

Well, it seems all depends on adrenaline, after a shock we all feel fine (if we survive) and alert, it's due to adrenaline. Then, watching an horror, at least at the beginning when you're young it's also a way to say" Seen? I'm strong, I don't have fear at all, I don't fear anything", but the main reason is really due to adrenaline shots.

My son is 14. Very smart, savvy, sophisticated, but all boy. He's reading Stephen King and Brian Keane (?). I told him to sit down at the library and pick a chapter of Clive's to read first, before becoming more involved. He's not the kind of kid to dive into anything without prior knowledge and comfort. He'll make a good choice, I believe. Mo Hayder. I heard about her another Shelfari member with similar tastes. I liked her Devil of Nanking, solely because it informed me of the atrocities in that city of 1939, which I was not aware. Otherwise, it's pure trash, but a quick read. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.

You reminded me to get back to reading "Gorky Park", which I am doing nightly. I like it, though you really have to be in the moment, unfettered by the events of the day. I've re-read many a page, as a result! Maybe that's why I liked Mo Hayder's books. They are pure pulp with very little redeeming value, but they have enough disgusting details that you have a hard time forgetting where you left off. I prefer something a little meatier, though. By the way--I checked out your shelf. You have some Clive Barker. How's he? My son was wondering, since he likes the horror/mystery genre.

Yep, it's in Italian, I'm sorry...
It's about why people go to see horrors and how special make up effects are made.

It may take me awhile now that I'm back teaching, which is frustrating, because Smith's writing requires that you sit a spell and read. I saw your Nezhnansky & Topol selections. Do they read well? How do they compare with Smith's writing?

You know, John. About 30 pages in, I realized I might be better off reading Gorky Park first. So, I'm now about 60 pages into that book, but have had so many interruptions. Encourage me to continue!

Hi, have you seen the film "Cabal"? It's a few different from the book, but not so much, I did my thesis about it.
I've studied sculpture and I did the thesis about the special make up effects.

Feel free to read any of their books and post what you read, your review, etc. in the thread for August reads.
