Sorry to see that you didn't like Made in the USA. I enjoyed it when I read it last year. I didn't find it to be as good as her first two but I thought it was a vast improvement over Shoot the Moon. Hopefully she will write another one soon and redeem herself.
Do you have any information about the seminar you can forward to me? I would love to look into that for next year or at another time it is offered.
The class is at Stockton College through the NJ Council for the Humanities. I received a letter in the mail about it. It sounds like the program is run every year specifically for teachers and librarians. I already have the reading list - The novels are Twilight, Holes and the Golden Compass. I had previously read the first two. The texts are Understanding Comics, Reading Don't Fix No Chevys and Just Girls. I'll let you know how it goes.On another note, the new Harry Potter movie comes out Wednesday. I'm sure everyone knew that already except for me. :)
Hi Martha,I am so glad you found Retail Hell on my shelf and recommended it to someone! I did get the galley at BEA. It was such a funny book and will make a great summer read. I've made it my mission to recommend it to the patrons at the public library.You were right in my neighborhood - only a couple of miles away. Sadly, I have yet to visit Edison's home. I did get to visit the lab years ago before it closed for renovation. From what I heard it is unbelievably gorgeous. I can see where the tenement museum would be a stark contrast.BEA is going to be in NY for the next few years so hopefully you'll be able to make it there next year. I try not to take too many ARCs because I know I won't get to read them all.My first couple of weeks off have gone by so quickly and next week I'm taking a class called Coming of Age literature. Gosh, I resemble that! I have read every (well, almost) bio of modern Presidents--am now ready Lincoln for our book club. By Gore Vidal. Also am reading The Reader (no pun!)--dabbling a bit in the law that books screams its debt to Positivism type law. Keep in touch!

What a great description of Sedaris and his new book! I too really enjoyed it ~ and I love how you describe his writing, as both self-loathing and misanthropic. I was also amused that he decided to quit smoking because he was increasingly becoming person non grata at all of his favorite places -- fancy hotels, restaurants and how he described Europe's belated but nonetheless enthusiastic embracing of nonsmoking in public places as the falling of dominoes (love the Cold War reference!) He never does mention quitting to get healthier ~ just how declasse it had become everywhere --- and how he seemed almost stunned at this very surprising turn of events! Very funny ~

oh nooooo..... way too many books, way too little time. Just found "Freddy and Fredericka" at Goodwill and I'm enjoying it. I'm also reading the "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" quadrilogy (sp?) by Tad Williams - the author of "Tailchaser's Song".
