I enjoy historical fiction, mysteries, science-fiction, and reading books from "soon-to-be-great" authors, i.e., new voices. I have worked in various capaciites in the field of mental health for 30+ years. I'm an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church since 2002; therefore, some of the books that I read are of a theological slant. I have been... more »

I did wonder if it was your daughter! Just looking at our old posts. Did you ever see The Help? What I'd you think? I haven't seen the movie yet.

    Hi John,
You asked me about Petty Magic and I did finish it. I gave it 3 stars. It was about Eve, a 160 year old witch and it follows her life as she starts dating a man who looks like a lover that was killed in WWII. The story goes back and forth between her time with her new lover and her old lover. There is also a side story about her sister being accused of killing her husband. I liked it but it took awhile to get into it. The storyline does not start for awhile because she is busy talking about being a witch. It took me awhile to get used to the writing and there are a lot of characters mentioned so it was hard keeping track of some of them but once the main story started I really got into it.

Forgot to mention, Callie is on pages 259 and 260. I have the advantage of having the Kindle edition so that I can search by name. I hope these page numbers match up with yours.

I appreciate you striving for accuracy, but if you look at the edit history all I did was correct what someone else had done. There was already an entry for Skeeter (see Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan) and someone had changed Eula to Skeeter giving us two entries for the same character. Eula is mention on pages 255 and 395. Alice is on pages 254 and 255.

That is too bad if people have been doing it on purpose. I was completely confused and thought it was just asking me to put my name as the person who posted. I wonder if others are making the same mistake. I'll try to figure out how to fix it.

It was a mistake. I've never used the new settings on Shelfari. If you are a religious person like you claim, give people the benefit of the doubt when mistake like that is made.

Yea the politics and culture is what actually drew me too this book, not so much the romance part.

    Hi John

I just had a look at your shelf.
You might like The Accomplice by Kathryn Heyman and The Diamond Dakota Mystery by Juliet Wills. They are both Historical fiction, that I read last year.

    Have a good day

    John,
I read your self description and we have a little in common. I went to seminary not too long ago, Ashland and I worked in the mental health arena before I was home with my kids. We have read many of same books and I wanted to recommend Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. It's a true story about helping others and changing yourself in the process. Have you read any books by Wally Lamb?

I know you are reading or have read Juliet. I wanted to let you know that discussion with the author is up if you have any questions you'd like to ask.

Hi John. Just wanted to let you know I started a 2011 New Releases thread in the What We Are Reading group. Hopefully we'll get lots of good suggestions for our wish lists! Not that I need any more books, of course.

Did you just delete your recent recommendations thread from the HF Group Reads group? I just posted a response and next thing I know your original post is no longer there...I hope you deleted it as otherwise I have no idea where it just went.

Hi John, I've finally completed Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. You had asked me to let you know what I thought of it... I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a bit dry at the beginning, but necessary to the story, I think. I'd describe it as 'Harry Potter' for adults, sometimes witty, sometimes dark, with a great cast of characters.
