OC WRITER

I am a freelance writer and photographer. I am a generalist, but my favorite subjects are small and family owned businesses, local history, photography and aviation. My first career was in insurance claims, mostly commercial liability. When I am writing I listen to classical and country music.

I am in two worlds in photography now and... more »

Hiya! Sorry for not responding sooner; I usually come on here, check update my shelf, check out what my friends are reading, and move on. Suffice to say, I'm fairly careful about who I have as a friend, and you have a great shelf, so thanks for the invite!!

Thanks for sharing that with me. I have found that those shorter (150- to 200-word) pieces are much, much harder to write than, say, a 1500-word article.

How long did you live in Chicago. I was born and raised in Washington state. But I lived in Chicago for ten years, and I loved it so much I tell people I'm from there. It's my adopted hometown, and given the chance, would go back in a heartbeat. I just love the city. Everything about it! What part of the city did you live? I started out in Evanston (ugh!), because I moved there to go to grad school at NWU. But then I moved to Old Town and lived there for eight years. Being the city girl that I am, I was definitely in my element. I'm curious what you thought about it.

Also, I'm into photography as well. I've traveled pretty extensively, so I've managed to cobble together quite a collection of photos. What do you like to photograph?

And finally, where did you get your interest in aviation? I ask because my father worked at Boeing for more than 25 years. He was the director of internal communications for the company.

Are you sure you gave me the right URL? I did a straight copy and paste and got an error message.

Hi OC Writer, Carwardine's book on Lincoln is an excellent (and highly readable) one. I have read a lot about Lincoln, too, but I was very impressed by this book. He's a Brit. From Oxford, if I recall, so it's a good piece of scholarship.

I have not read anything else by McCarty yet. I have The Road here. Just have not got around to it, yet. Thanks for the recommendation on All The Pretty Horses.

I peeked at your shelf. Curious what you thought about Blood Meridian?

To be honest, it was over 20 years ago that I read that series. I think the first one was the best. I loved Witches of Eastwick and S. I particularly enjoy Updike's take on relationships. Have you read In the Beauty of the Lilies? It's another one that I read years ago and would like to re-read.

I never reject constructive criticism; to do so would be an automatic death (quite probably a slow and painful demise) of my writing career.

Raymond Carver, hands down. Carver's work has much of the "flavor" of Hemingway (another of my idols) and Kafka (also on my list). I first got my hands on "Will You Please be Quiet, Please" when I was only 11, and inhaled the works within it. “The Idea”, and “The Father” were two of the stories in that collection that stood out to me.

Raymond Carver was at the top of my list of people that I wanted to meet, even back then, and I thought it would have been possible, considering how close we were living to where he was (we were in Portland, OR at that time). Carver, however, died when I was about 12, and I suffered my first period of pre-teen drama (don't we all, though!).

Interestingly, though, Tess Gallagher (Carver's wife at the time he died) lives very near me now (I am in Gig Harbor, WA and she is also on the Olympic Peninsula) I think it would be wonderful to get up the nerve to contact her...

Sorry to be so long-winded! But, I am a writer; it's what I do ;o)

    Cheers,

    ~Rebecca Reece

Yes, I have read the Rabbit books. I enjoyed them quite well. I am partial to the author as he lived just a few miles from my home town but the books stand on their own. Enjoy and have a wonderful holiday!

If you like a good sea story then Dana's Two Years Before the Mast, is a must read. It's a nonfiction account taken from Dana's journal written around 1835. He started as a first time crew member in New England and sailed around Cape Horn to end up working the hide trade in California during the Mexican Period. It definitely gives you a feel for the backbreaking misery of being a sailor in that time period. And his descriptions of California before it became overrun with people are incredible to imagine.
