I saw your avatar and I was like, "That is so familiar looking. Where have I seen that image?" LOL. I love that painting you did.
"The Meaning of Night" is one of the best novels I've read. It has a sequel that is called "The Glass of Time," which is just as good. It's hard to pin a genre on it, maybe historical fiction. It will remind you of reading a Dickens novel or The Count of Monte Cristo, or really any of the "classics" in literature. Betrayal, revenge, and the darkness of human emotion are some of the key themes. Don't let the first sentences put you off because the writer is so good that the main character who turns you off in those first sentences becomes sympathetic to the reader.
I recommended it to one person who was only so-so about it, claiming it was very wordy. It's not as wordy as Dickens, or no one could read it. There are footnotes that I think are there to make it seem authentic of the period, but I just ignored them. The author has a literary style, so you have to be in the mood for something very different from the run-of-the-mill popular fiction of today. It blew me away.
