    Hey Book Buddy!

Hope you're well & have survived the winter & are enjoying spring up there in the Big Apple. Yes, it's great we're book buddies this time round!

I don't mind anything, Beth, whatever you think I'd like. I'm a pretty eclectic reader & change genres all of the time. Just give me something you loved & I think we'll be good. It could be any genre, any author, just as long as I can get it at the library. =-)

Now do you have a preference? Would you like to stick w/ fantasy? Or would you like to try something like...oh, like southern gothic? Or what about just a ripping good yarn?

I haven't had much time for playing in shelfariland & apologize for the delay in answering you. Both hubby & I are surfing the net's jobs & I'm the chief chauffeur for my mother & her slew of doctors. Neither activity is much fun & I've become a very unpleasant bi*ch.

I haven't read Wise Man's Fear yet although I did break down & buy it. Have you read it? Is it as good as the first? I'm kinda afraid it won't be...just because we've waited sooooo long.

Good to hear from you...Great to have you as a book swap partner!

I didn't think I gave it enough chance. I was intimidated by the book's length.

Hi, Beth! Suze's thread in BBD reminded me that I was supposed to read The Name of the Wind for the previous swap. I found a copy of the book, but I didn't get past the first few pages. I wasn't able to connect to the flow of the writing. I admit defeat.

Check out my shelf, there are only about 40 books on it, representing the best authors of sci-fi Fantasy in my humble opinion.

Hope you will like them - they are two of my favorite authors. Shinn also writes sci-fi though they're not as good as her fantasy. I read Hero and the Crown long long ago in my youth, and maybe The Blue Sword - I don't remember much about them except that I wasn't too impressed at the time. I was expecting so much more because one of my favorite books even today is McKinley's Beauty - nothing else she has written so far has captivated me like that one, even though I enjoy her writing (Rose Daughter didn't have the same magic). I will have to get around to her newer stuff some day.

I'm glad you liked them. It's a wonderful series and I'm hoping that she continues to add to it. I would recommend Marillier's other series'. The Bridei Chronicles (Dark Mirror, Blade of Fortriu & the Well of Shades) was very good and a similar style. Also, the Light Isles which is 2 books, Wolfskin & Foxmask are also very good.

A couple of other good series' that I would recommend would be by Mercedes Lackey. The Last Herald Mage series and the Heralds of Valdemar were both very good and kind of reminded me of the same style as Marillier.

I'm glad you liked the Sevenwaters book, as I did. There are two other books in the series called "Heir to Sevenwaters" and "Seer of Sevenwaters." See if you like those.

Beth, I had to come by & thank you so much for including Daughter of the Forest. I'm loving it!!! Life has become rather difficult down here (hubby lost his job & neither of us can find work) & I need some good escapist lit. Daughter is wonderful & I can loose myself in it for a few hours at a time. Books help so much, don't they? Thanks soooo much.

*jumping up & down* Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, Beth!!! Your lovely package came yesterday & you're so generous!!! I only expected Mockingjay, not 2 more books, too!!! The Juliet Marillier lbooks look great & I can't wait to read them!!! Oh, & Mockingjay...I sat down last night & am half- way through...It's not ending the way I thought it might. I'll be sad to see that series end.

No worries on American Gods because I have it already! I loved it, too. We have such good taste, don't we?! :0)

I hope you're well & surviving winter. Ours down here has been colder than ever & broken all kinds of records. It does make for lots of reading though, bundled & cozy by the fire.

Thanks so much again!! You've been wonderfully generous!!!

I always seem to start my notes to you w/ an apology, LOL, & here we are once again: sorry for taking a while to get back to you. I loved Whisting in the Dark, & I think you will, too. I've got it put aside for you.

YES, move The Hollow Hills up your TBR list! IMHO, it's the best take on the Arthur legends. Told from a Merlin perspective I hadn't read before, it takes you through Merlin's life. I lOVED Mary Stuart & read all of her books as a teen. Not sure how they'd hold up now,,,they're sort of gothic fiction, but they were solidly written. I'd love to hear your take on The Hollow Hills.

Ohhhhh, our vacay!!! We leave really soon...My husband has to play business golf for a few days so I'll lounge around in the resort & then be arm candy for the business dinners. Then, we leave for a small cottage on the beach on Top Sail Island, NC for a few days. He'll be fishing & I'll be reading. I've got a suitcase of books packed! I'm so looking forward to doing nothing but reading & having no responsibilities. *SIGH*

Hope you're well & enjoying NY's fall. I miss that season a lot. It's not like that down here.

Beth, the books came! Thanks so much!! We leave on vacation soon & they're packed in my bag, ready to read & relax. Woo hoo!!

*looking up at your planning to read list*

I've got Whistling in the Dark...Want it?

And The Hollow Hills was/is one of my all time faves. I highly recommend it. ;)

Hey Beth, Thanks for your kind words..It's OK about the loss of those friends. I keep telling myself they weren't really friends or they wouldn't have acted that way towards us.

I'm excited about the package you're sending me, & look forward to some quality brain candy!! I need it...

OH!!! Poor Frankie!! I hope he's feeling better now. Isabelle was recently sick, too. She spent a day in the vet's on IVs, (dehydration due to some virus) came home OK but then started a horrible cough that would wake us at night. She had bronchitis - who knew a dog could get that? I hear your pain about the vet bills, but I bet like us, you pay for anything that will make them feel better. I go to pieces when they don't feel good.

I hope things turn around for you soon & you can follow your dreams. Good luck w/ the photography exhibitions!!! That's so exciting. As for teaching in Germany...Go for it!! We've visited Germany a few times (I love Bavaria!) & loved it. Most people speak English & are very warm & hospitable. The food is yummy, the scenery gorgeous. How exciting to be able to live there! Would your students be young? (I could help you a little bit then.)

Please let me know how your shows turn out...I'll be rooting for you! And it would be great to meet one day in person!!

Hey Beth!!! The thread at BBD was too long for me to directly answer you so I thought I'd just leave a note here. =)

The wedding was AWFUL, seriously hair-pulling awful. It destroyed my friendship w/ the bride's mom & dad. It wasn't due to anything I did, but their attitudes & lack of follow-up on wedding tasks. On the wedding day, they expected me to just "fix" everything they'd left undone. They also walked around telling everyone how much money they'd spent. I was mortified to hear that, especially when everything I'd done, I'd donated. The reality is that they were so damn cheap, I ended up either buying stuff for their daughter or getting it donated so she could have what she wanted. (I mean inexpensive items like a pillow for the ring bearer!) A few guests also caused some problems - like "partying" in the woods w/ some illegal substances. Not too cool to do that at someone else's house...

The rest of my summer has been...topsy-turvy. I've spent it painting & helped to renovate my sister's house so our mom could move in. Then mom was in the hospital for a week, seriously ill. Now she's in a nursing home, receiving some therapy, so I've been daily driving back & forth to see her. *sigh* Too much stress so I've been vegging on lots of "trashy" fun novels.

No, I haven't read The Hunger Games, but would love to!!!

The latest Nora, The Search, involves dogs. It's a hoot & I know you'd like it!!!

And how are you? Did you get a companion dog for your lil guy? Any more news on moving to Europe?

    Hi Beth,
It's been a year since we discussed books featuring empowering heroines, I know, but just wanted to let you know that I did give the Kushiel's Dart series another try, and I could not put them down. I loved them. Am also planning to read Ann Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy. Have you come across anything excellent lately?
