I think Dr. Hidalgo and Dr. Garcia are still teaching, I haven't had the pleasure of studying under them yet. I am not sure about Ma'am Llanot, however.
the philippines has a lot to offer.......not only beaches but mountains,rice terraces,the people, their smiles inspite of the hardship they have to face everyday...France is rich ( Guadeloupe is part of France, it's one of their regions or depatments, as they call it) but people are complaining all the time and they hardly smile anymore.......! We have rich culture and the positive side of colonialisation enriched this rich culture further.......also people travel to discover places.....why would I come here? Definitely not for their beaches either!
Hello! What degree did you pursue at Peyups, if I may ask? P.S. Impressive bookshelf.
The last time I was in the Philippines was over ten years ago. And that's not because I chose to. getting out of here is so expensive!!!!!!! Yah it could be fun but when you live here, sun, surf and sand get relegated to some week-ends......work...work...work...it's very expensive here. Guadeloupe, though, is one of the most beautiful archipelagoes in the Caribbean. Like a giant assymetrical butterfly, Guadeloupe is perched on the arc of the lesser Antilles. I have friends here who fly all the way to South East Asia,some to the Philippines and come back with great stories.........when you're on vacation,anywhere on earth is paradise!
Well, my husband's from here...in 1991 sick and tired of the water shortages,electrical black outs,garbage piling up everywhere and the coup d'états we decided to try living here in the Caribbean....that's how I ended up here. When I got here back in '91, I was the only Pinay...then there were three more and then they left ( I didn't really know them very well..) and I'm back being la seule Philippine qui habite ici maintenant...voila....l'histoire de ma vie...enfin, une petite partie!
Where are you from Noel? Are you Filipino? And where are you living ? Yah les bandes dessinés sont des objets de collections ici et en France Métropolitain. You should try getting them. Reading iis one of the best ways to learn a language. have a dictionary at hand for some really hard words, otherwise just follow the sense of the phrase.........
hi noel m ,We're discussing "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf cafe - Mall of Asia on Sept 13 (Sat) at around 5pm, when everyone has (let's hope) finished browsing at the Manila International Book Fair.... kwentuhan lang naman. details at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/12439/discussions/65122/(unofficial)-book-discussion-in-September.hope to see you there!
Théodore Géricault was born in the late 18th century and was an artist of the romantic school....Mais, tu n'est pas pretentieux...you just don't know french comic books ( bande dessiné ) ...you should check them out....Corto maltèse is great, Asterix...the magic of Goscinny and Uderzo...the drawings are works of art in their simplicity an precision and the stories are witty...then there's Les Bidochon which is a very funny commentary on the life of a very ordinary couple and of society in general....Le Chat is another one....lots of play of words.
that's right! but mind you, Asterix isn't lowbrow...one must have a wide culture and knowledge of European history to be able to enjoy Asterix completely....there's for example that scene in Asterix and Cléopatra where the pirates had a shipwreck and they all ended up in a raft with the boat's mast and torn sail in the middle..and the chief pirate said: Nous sommes Médusées...which refers to a very famous painting by Géricault...Le Radeau de méduse....Even in english it's quite witty....Panoramix the druid is called Getafix in english...;
I learned french because I had to. When I arrived here in Guadeloupe in 1991, I didn't speak a word of the language. I used my ears,imitated, read books and comic books like Asterix that I have already read in English and petit à petit i learned french.....english books are also very hard to come by here so reading in rench is obligatoire ou presque!
