I'm the former manager of an independent bookstore which sadly, had to close, but it has not extinguished my love of bookselling. I now work part time for two other indie bookstores. I've always been an avid reader, and have found my passion in putting the right book into just the right persons hands. By the way, I also love cats as much as... more »

Beautiful Assassin is by Michael White and published last year -- I discovered it in my many piles of books, thought it looked interesting. And amazingly enough, it's really good -- a young Russian woman who killed 300 Germans -- she was a sniper, based on a true story apparently.

Glad to hear you're at Diesel only -- I like John and Allison a lot. You know Mike worked for them just before he bought Rakestraw.

Recently, Joy for Beginners, Dreams of Joy, The Darlings (one of Pam Dorman's books for next winter). Those are the most recent.

    Really enjoying A Fierce Radiance.

We took 6 months to read W & P. Three is ambitious, I think.

I never read it -- I remember Michael really liked it. It might have been one of our 1st edition club selections.

Hope you can make it, and if not, read the book -- I'm almost finished, and it's really one of her best!

I'm reading "Dreams of Joy" now -- she comes to RB next Monday at noon. Are you coming?
Your answer about reading lots of books at the same time was enlightening - it makes sense. I often listen to one in the car in addition to whatever I'm reading at home.

    Linda,

How can you read so many books at once? I wish I could.

I look forward to hearing what you have to say about "You Are Not Your Brain." Sounds like something I might benefit from reading. Maybe you'll be far enough along to fill me in on the way to the ballpark. I can hardly wait ;-)

It will be fun to see you at both events. And you're right, I really like the bookclubbing, handselling part of the buisness. I don't think Cheryl gets to do as much as she would like, but .... I was there first.

I haven't read Caleb's Crossing yet (tho I really like Geraldine Brooks a lot. I thought 22 Britannia Road was very good, but I think Love of My Youth would be more fun to talk about.

I'm part of Pam Dorman's buzz group - we read Britannia Rd. Alice Bliss and Last Letter from Your Lover in December. I liked them all a lot, but Last letter was my favorite.

You know, undoubtedly, that Amanda Hodgekinson is coming to Rakestraw on Friday the 13th at 7.

Well that's my 2 cents, for what its worth. Hard choice!

I'm reading The Three Stages of Amazement right now - she's coming the 25th with Ann Packer for lunch.

Loved The Invisible Bridge -- one of my top 5 from last year. As anyone who knows me will tell you, I love a good story. I also really like The Love of My Youth -- would be fun for a bookgroup of middle-aged women. A lot of "what if" discussion, I bet.

The Bibliophiles read "WinW" last fall; it was a Marguerite pick. I really liked it! Has Christine read it? She might enjoy it. Finishing up an historical novel for the Tudors group, but as soon as I'm finished, I'm all over Jane Leavy's Mickey Mantle bio. Just happened upon it on the new book shelf at the library last week.

Before I read your note this morning, I had a brainstorm, and decided to go with Twain's "The Innocents Abroad." I was supposed to read it for another book club earlier this spring and didn't get to it then, but I came away determined to read it soon. It seemed like a good pick for The Bibliophiles too, so...there ya go. Hope you're having a good day ;-)

OK. Let's trade ;-) I'll probably see you before I leave for SLC. I don't go until May 11...the date of the RR meeting. I'm stumped so far trying to come up with a book for May for The Bibliophile Club. I need to come up with something soon. We seem to get our best response with "classics"...but that can be interpreted pretty broadly. There just doesn't seem to be much interested in discussing the really current stuff. I guess people are reading those on their own, or with their book clubs. So...any ideas?

Hey Linda, Sorry I missed your call. I'm not sure where I was, but somehow it dropped from our active voice mail into saved voice mail and I just discovered it today. I realized when I heard it that I won't be in town for our next Rebels' meeting. I leave that Wednesday for Spring Quilt Market in Salt Lake City. It's one of two big trade shows specifically aimed at people in the quilting biz and I'll be there doing presentations and signings for my little Sunbonnet Sue book (which came out in February and is already in a second printing ;-) So...I guess I'll need to default to Christine on this one, and pick up the following month (or after the summer, and W&P).
I hate, hate, hate to miss...especially two months in a row. I'm still intending to read the May book though, and--if I finish in time--can send in some comments.
Hope all is well. Let's talk soon. I have a few books to give you (including Blind Your Ponies" which I know Trudy is waiting for. I posted a review on my page. I think those local "critics" were particularly harsh.
