Stella, I've not read "Blood Meridian". It is on my wish list. I saw the movie "No Country for Old Men". The only McCarthy I have read is "All the Pretty Horses". I'm still looking for a good used copy of "The Road". Let me know how you like any of his that you read. I'm pretty fascinated with McCarthy as an author though and plan to read much more of his work.

oh, boy, Stella...Blood Meridian. it is more than hardcore McMurtry...even more intense than McMurtry's most hardcore which i think is Comanche Moon (which isn't really one of my favorites of his). Blood Meridian is ultra-violent poetic-prose. and poetic-prose usually doesn't work for me...with a few exceptions...and this is one. i loved it. You may need a drink or 2 to get through it though. but, that being said, have fun. -John

Stella- I was looking at your shelf. It is excellent. Not only do we have a lot of books in common but quite a number are some of my very favorites. Let me just run down some authors and novels that we both share an appreciation for. Of course, Lonesome Dove and the McMurtrys (as you might have guessed), my very favorite Steinbeck- East of Eden, Memoirs of a Geisha, Life of Pi, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (which i read very recently), Hunter S. Thompson, John Irving, Cormac McCarthy, Catch-22, and White Oleander. You liked White Oleander...I was wondering if you have read her Paint It Black. I rate it as high or even higher. Also one of my very favorite novels right now is The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Since our tastes seem quite similar...I am going to look over ones you like that i haven't read for future reading. Thank you for listening. -John

i need to rewrite it...instead of auto biography i'm thinking auto-geography, like he wrote a map of his psyche...he is macondo and the buendias simply various parts of himself, f'instance:
he got his wholesome, sturdy rock of a grandma self, but it's balanced by the s--t pilar self, who outlives the granny!

you probably have this by now, but anyway here goes: point yer mouse on a book on yer shelf...then click on the "write a review" highlighted.

why did you think that you, of all people, might be bothering me...am i suddenly standoffish or something?

john o'toole famously languished for the appreciation his opus failed to garner, dead before seeing it's loving embrace by all and sundry...compared to a modern day twain and perhaps the only writer i've ever read that deserved that particularly well tossed about sobriquet. an truly american must read: what do we do with all our prosperity? "squander" is nice word...
you'll laff your gut sore during the first half; my personal guarantee, and i haven't read it in years. i heard at one point that john goodman was being considered for the lead for a movie long overdue.
highly recommended by meself, who is no one to suggest anything.
i wish i could recommend something substantial to you, a moving feast of thought and feeling, but unlike the movies i am not so well versed in this region...or actually just like the movies come to think of it. one never hears or sees enough perspective, i guess...so much wonder in the world...

stella (or whoever you are out there in the desert mountains with a natty robe on and open and a fat cat dozing on a windowsill, a cup of tea nearby...) (how i long to know your real name!), on a very personal note, would you talk to me? and don't play this one as if you don't know what i mean. kwms50@yahoo.com

Goodness, we do have many books in common! Are you reading from the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die List? I noticed you have quite a few that are on that list. I'm been using it as one of my sources for about a year now and have learned to be selective with it; but mostly I have found some very good books and been introduced to some excellent new authors through using it. Glad to become befriended by another serious reader!

    Cheers

Hi Stella, you get recommendations from individual people, friends i.e.
If you take a look at the FAQ (a link in small greyish letters on the bottom of every page) I hope a lot of "things Shelfari" become clearer.
I hope you enjoy yourself here!
