Hi Gus, I see you're reading Shadow of the Wind! What do you think? It's one of my favorites-- Zafon has a new one out now too. I'm anxious to hear your opinion. :)

I will have to give that some thought - I always try to find the bright side of things, so the themes you refer to would not be ones I would seek out - still, I have read some stories like that, so I will browse my actual shelves and see if anything jumps out at me. Will get back to you soon! :)

I have a huge TBR pile at the moment, including probably 10 books that belong to the library but I will put World War Z on the list. What I really need right now is a book that will completely allow me to get lost in it, but in a good way - something a little humorous would be great. Have any recommendations along those lines?

I've read Last Exit to Brooklyn. I'm not sure if I've got it listed or not, I'll have to check my shelf. I probably won't make it to the library for a few days because of the weather but I will put all of yours and Kathy's suggestions on a list when I do - thanks for the suggestions. In the meantime I found a book in my drawer that I haven't read yet that I've started. I have no idea where I got it and its probably no good but its better than nothing....I hope.

Those are some of my favorites too!! I imported a bunch of my books from a site called bibliophil, and some of the ratings got lost. I absolutely adored Like Water For Chocolate..it was so lyrical and magic. The Descent was by far the most frightening book I have read in a long time - no going in caves for me any time soon!

Nice to "meet" you Gus - I happen to have really like Lonesome Dove as well :)

I'm not reading anything at the moment. Since you don't recommend Angle of Repose, is there anything else you might recommend - I mean that they will have down at the Hootersville library. I have no plans to see Time Travelers Wife at all...I doubt it will be any good. Have been wanting to see Julie, Julia because of Meryl Streep but its not playing down at Mt. Pilot yet.

haven't read the Janet Fitch novel yet, but I would like to say that I have at least heard of it and had some interest in it. can't really remember...I find myself having lots of interest in a great many books and having a long list of books to read and then I forget which ones I wanted to read (if I don't buy them and stuff them on my bookshelves). I own a small library...literally.

of course, thank you! house of leaves was sensational; my copy is filled to the brim with written notes, color-coded post-it notes, and generally roughed up from love. i've started parts of world war z, but nothing in depth enough yet to consider it a steady read so far - my fiance has the copy and only recently have i been able to sit down, though now that i do i have plenty of other books on my plate. thanks for the suggestions!

No, I haven't read it. But thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely check it out if it's nearly as good as White Oleander!

I have never had one favorite book at a time- always a handful of favorites.

My shelf is untidy though- right now, many of my "plan to reads" are ones I have heard of that seem interesting (and I hope to get to them before I'm 30) and the "reading" shelf is whatever is in my catch from the library that week...I might not have even opened it yet, but I will any minute now. But if it's no good, then I will remove it and read something else.

Now, I've got to give Lonesome Dove a go. I can't think of any that I've read before, but next week, I will pick it up.

    Hi John-

I will definitely follow your advice. Never Let Me Go and Paint It Black were at the bottom of my TBR pile- I put them there out of loyalty to the authors (since I loved their other books so much) but I have this weird habit of putting off an author's other novels if the first one I read is too good- fear of disappointment, I guess?
    It's weird.

But I can see from your shelf that your recommendations are sound. Among the books we have in common, I saw Watership Down,Good Night Mr Tom and No Country for Old Men at first glance.

So, in addition to taking your advice, I will also be stealing from your shelf. Hope you don't mind...

Hi Gus, I thank you for the compliments on my shelf. I read White Oleander quite some time ago--I am a pretty carniverous reader. I see we are both Steinbecj=ck fans. I am stuck in this really really long series that I am loving but it won't let em out. *choking*

Hi there, thanks for the compliment. I love horror! I do switch around and enjoy some romance-paranormal mostly. I liked Intensity, but have not read The Cell or Mine yet. Koontz, King, and McCammon are great aren't they? I want to read a Joe R. Lansdale this summer and maybe a Robin Hobb.

John, I haven't been here for a little while. I've noticed they made some changes and I am not happy with them, not happy at all, especially with the adverts on the right. Let "them" know of my displeasure will you.
