  • Manet's Modernism: or, The Face of Painting in the 1860s

Art students or professionals would probably enjoy this more than I did. I simply don't see most of the stuff the author does in paintings - even when he points it out!

  • Nox dormienda (a long night for sleeping) : an Arcturus mystery

The blurbs on the book cover present this "Roman noir" as a new genre, but it doesn't seem all that different to me from the early Falco novels by Lindsey Davis or the Libertus novels by Rosemary Rowe. If you like those, you'll probably like this.

The central mystery is fairly interesting, as are the presumably recurring characters in the household of Arcturus. However, I feel the personal stories of Arcturus and his household were tied up a little too neatly at the end.

The edition I read consists of a 4 page essay that provides an overview of Pissarro's life and approach to art, followed by 16 large full page color plates of his work.

Well written, easy to read - even if you aren't familiar with art history or criticism - with lots of color pictures of the works discussed. And not stuck at the back of the book or the middle of the book - the pictures are at most a page away from the first mention in the text.

If you love natural history, or you love museums, but especially if you love natural history museums, you'll probably love this book.
