  • Death of a Witch
    • Rated 3 stars

Reading this series is like eating the foam off a root beer float. You might not want to do it every day, but it sure is fun once in a while.

  • A Plague of Poison (A Templar Night Mystery)
    • Rated 4 stars

An interesting mystery, with recurring characters I enjoy reading about.

  • The Invention of Air
    • Rated 4 stars

A most interesting read. I like how Johnson suggests parallels to modern life without beating you over the head with them.

The science is kept to a minimum (no equations!), so don't let that scare you off.

  • All the Colors of Darkness
    • Rated 3 stars

Overly complicated plot and what in a TV show would be characterized as frequent product placements detract from the overall result. It almost seems like the author would rather be writing about different characters, or a least a different setting.

  • Death of a Pilgrim
    • Rated 4 stars

There's not much detecting going on in this story, but the main characters are charming and Dickinson's descriptions of the pilgrims and their progress toward Santiago de Compostela are enjoyable.

    The Waxman Murders

    by Paul Doherty

Sometimes Doherty's books feel like they were churned out in a hurry, but not this one. A fun read from one of his better series.

  • The Peopling of British North America: An Introduction
    • Rated 3 stars

A brief introduction to Bailyn's work on the settlement of the 13 colonies up until the Revolutionary War. There's just a little bit of information about Canada. Interesting and easily read in an evening or two.

  • Mesopotamian Myths the Legendary Past (The Legendary Past)
    • Rated 4 stars

A short introduction, focusing on Gilgamesh and creation myths, with some background on the discovery and decipherment of texts. The translations are taken from Dalley's "Myths from Mesopotamia."

  • Where Serpents Sleep: A Sebastian St. Cyr Mystery
    • Rated 4 stars

Very enjoyable read. There are a few places where the prose is a bit enthusiastic. For example, 3 different slang terms are used on 1 page to describe a group of prostitutes. But the characters are well drawn (St. Cyr and Hero's relationship is reminiscent of William Monk & Hester) and I look forward to their future adventures.

  • When Asia Was the World
    • Rated 3 stars

Reading "When Asia Was the World" is like watching a television documentary: there's just enough information about a dozen or so people that you wish you were reading a book about those people; it occasionally repeats things that were discussed in the previous chapter; and it has excellent maps.
