I love Wicked too. So smart, so lush, so haunting. Reminds me of what Philip Pullman did with fantasy in general in His Dark Materials. And I, too, have no idea how a musical could begin to tap into the dark luscious political sensuousness of the book. Like, if Rachel from Glee is at all into it...it can't be that good.

Just thinking about it again I was like, "wait, I didn't just "not like" this book. I hated this book."

I really enjoyed a Billion Wicked Thoughts...it was one of those books that kept drawing me to share stuff I'd learned. Also, the cover doesn't make it super obvious that you're reading about naughty bits, which is useful when you're in a room with a bunch of kids.

Mitch and I were falling asleep last night and I was like, "....babe? Babe? Maybe we could start getting like the majority of our veggies/fruit from the farmer's market, instead of just our weekend treat veggies. At least during the summer." And he was like, "....huh? go to sleep. we'll price it out." I want to be good like she says, Mia, but I am so poor. and I eat an exorbitant amount of vegetables and fruit. sigh. also, it is not a super great growing climate here. i am le sad.

I was like creeping through your favorites one day and it just looked phenomenal. Plus I wanted to make out with the Shirley Jackson Castle book.

Also, fun fact: my ex-thesis supervisor Nilges taught The Dispossessed in his Utopian Fictions class, which I never took but which Mitch did. (yes, i'm clearly nostalgic, but only for fun Nilges time.)

Argh, FINE. I'll reread One Hundred Years of Solitude and I won't just notice all the incest and wonder why everyone has the same name. I'll be good. I'll get it this time. dammit.

A note on Frankenstein: Yeah, it's really dry. Like it's not at all what you expect. I also think it's one of those books that you love if you read it in a course, because it's chock-full of interesting logic and claims and things you can write papers about. And if you have a good professor talk to you about Mary Shelley's logic, it's even better. (The professor who taught me Frankenstein was also Mitch's thesis supervisor on the Gothic). He talked about how in Frankenstein, reproduction looks like the truly monstrous thing (Dr. Frankenstein dreads having to marry), and cited how many of Mary Shelley's family died in childbirth. Mary Shelley is one of those female authors that Mitch and I think have like really perfect style.

P.s. you know that I just get excited about talking about books and sharing said stuff with you, right, and am not trying to change your opinion/be offended at how you felt about the book, right? I'm a book nerd.

Important question: Should I read or watch Valley of the Dolls first?

Hi Calamity, I finally read Winter's Bone and LOVED it! The movie was also good and filmed not too far from where I live. I now keep one eye open on a pretty constant basis. The book was truly wonderful, very visceral. How are you? I've been rocking out to some good old Metallica lately, my horns are always up. Cheers!

    #1: they're taking Scully's egggggggggggs.
#2. E.B. White is amazing. Did you know he was also an incredibly gifted essayist and wrote, like, one of the best books on style that pretentious English majors have going for them in terms of making their writing less pretentious? Plus, I actually have a collection of his essays (I think that were published in the New Yorker) that I'm saving as a treat for myself. So anyway, all E.B. White love is well-warranted. My favorite (tied with Charlotte's Web) is Stuart Little, which is just so heartbreaking at the end. All his books are heartbreaking at the end.

Have you seen the movie of Assassination yet? Please promise me you will if you loved the book. Ungh it's like my favorite movie. period. Also, merry Christmas - sorry my correspondence has been sporadic, but exams are finally over as of four-five hours from now, and then you'll hear too much from me.

You did it! Now I just have to slough through 700 pages of postmodernism for Mitch. Ugh. the things we do for love.

I liked "The Kid" a lot. It's way more honest about the adoption process and relationships than most. I also recommend "The Commitment," also by Dan Savage, which I may buy and place meaningfully about the house, and of course his column and podcast if you are into such things. ;)

Dammit. We were so close. I just am no good at reading about dysfunctional girls anymore and so White Oleander was too much for me. (I think TVS sneaks in there because the genius of that book is that you're reading about the boys, too, and like the book is like one of those optical illusions where you can switch between the old woman and the beautiful lady, except it's that you're switching between the tragedy of the girls and the tragedy of the boys. anyway.)

I'M READING MARILYNNE ROBINSON NOW WE NEVER DISAGREE ABOUT THAT.

Okay, so I let Mitch pick my next book for me, and he picked Light in August, and I know we've had our disagreements about Faulkner, and I really genuinely like Absalom, Absalom!, but I'm currently on page 150 and Joe Christmas has eaten food he's thrown onto the floor off of the floor and there's now a rape scene and like.....I totally get what you hate him because I hate him right now too. Shut up, Faulkner. We know you're Faulkner. Jesus.

No offense taken! When you grow up surrounded by loggers and hippies and you are neither, a pretty thick skin develops! You should read "Speak" it is very meaningful. My horns are up and waving to some G-N-R!!
