I've been a voracious reader all my life, always reading multiple books at a time to make up for the fact that I don't read especially quickly. I read a variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction. I read a lot of literary fiction, chick lit, classics, mystery (especially the cozy kind), philosophy, spiritual, and military. I always have a... more »

Though I don't read a lot of them I generally enjoy legal thrillers. Reading this novel I felt like a learned something about criminal law as well as enjoyed a good page-turning read. I appreciated that the story stayed centered on just a handful of characters and didn't meander off with lots of red herrings. While the actual murderer was somewhat revealed before the end of the story, getting there contained many surprises.

I always have a soft spot for books that contain a love of books and reading. This novel contains that especially at the beginning and that's what drew me in. The writing of this novel is well done and probably somewhat surpasses the storytelling. Many reviewers are critical of the major part of the story about a librarian who gets caught up in circumstances and kidnaps a 10 yr old boy who's an avid patron of the library, finding it too unrealistic. It is. But, the good-natured humor and warmth of Lucy and Ian carries the book to its positive end. I found the side story of Lucy and her Russian father and heritage to be more of a distraction than a good integration into the main plot. Overall I enjoyed this read.

I haven't read a Jill Churchill mystery for several years, but had a yen to read one. I find her cozy mysteries to be well-written, with characters I enjoy and can relate to. The mysteries are interesting and I like the interplay between the characters. While I'm not a fast reader by nature, Churchill's books read very quickly and keep your attention. I really enjoyed my visit with Jane Jeffrey, her neighbors and friends. I'll probably read the next book sooner rather than later.

While this is the first Monica Fairview book that extends the Pride and Prejudice story, I actually read this one after reading her second installment. I thoroughly enjoyed that one and this one was equally good. Fairview focuses on the minor P&P character Caroline and throws into the mix Darcy's cousin Robert Darcy. While I knew from the beginning that Caroline and Robert get together, Fairview weaves a story that is interesting from the first line to the last. I liked how she fleshed out her Austen characters as well as her new creations. I highly recommend this book and the one that follows "The Darcy Cousins".

This was a cute read. My own love of Jane Austen made me appreciate the characters love of her books too. At the bottom-line this is a romance novel. The female characters seemed better written than the male ones. The male dialogue sometimes seemed a bit simple. Overall, the book kept my attention and I enjoyed the read.

This book intrigued me at first. The subjects of baseball and small colleges are not ones that would normally pique my interest, but for some reason they did in this case. As the book went on the initial stories didn't seem to play out as interestingly as I thought they would. I found it difficult to care about any of the major characters as the story unfolded. However, I did find a renewed enjoyment at the very end of the book. In general, the beginning and end are quite good, but the middle is somewhat blah and unoriginal. The author shows a lot of promise. Much of the writing, the wordsmithing, is wonderful.

While this book held my attention enough to read it, once I was done the reading didn't feel very satisfying. I liked the the book was unusual in its subject and characters, but it still seemed to be missing something. I liked the development of the individual characters, but didn't find their interaction with each other very satisfying.

  • Names My Sisters Call Me

This book kept drawing me in all the way through. While it seemed that several of the scenes played out similarly I continued to want to know what happened with all the characters and their interactions with each other. The characters felt real and their strengths and failings felt genuine too. I found the story very relateable even without having sisters myself. I could very much relate to Courtney's situation with both her fiance and her ex-boyfriend. The ending felt real and the resolution realistic.

I stumbled upon this series and I'm so glad that I did. Loved this first book in an historical mystery series that takes place in the late 1800s. Always enjoy a strong woman protagonist and its interesting to see her try to balance the independent life she chooses for herself and being part of high society. This first book nicely sets up the main characters for the continuing series. This book is a fine combination of historical romance and mystery. As soon as I finished this book I moved on to the second one. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

Just to say upfront that I'm a HUGE Jennifer Crusie fan. I thought I had read pretty much all her books, but once I started reading his one (I've been re-reading all her books for several months now) I realized I hadn't read it before. I very much enjoyed it. While the story is somewhat the typical formula of Crusie, that doesn't matter as the characters, their relationships, and the dialogue are what is most enjoyable. I found the stalking ex-boyfriend a bit unnerving, as I'm sure was the intent, but that storyline didn't go too far, which I appreciated. I read Crusie's books for the smile that they bring over and over. And this, like most of her books, did not disappoint.
