I picked up this book from the new fiction section of the library. I was intrigued by the cover art and the title. I am so glad I read it, it was wonderful. It was tragic and beautiful all the way through to the end. Most of it was very sad, but poetic in every run on sentence that was so full of poignant detail. I would recommend this book to everyone, and especially any one who has ever felt misunderstood and cast aside. My only disappointment is that this is her first book. I can't go running back to the library for more!!! Not yet, anyway...

This book is about two completely different groups of people who, while trying to accomplish the same thing, are going about it completely differently. A group of hippies living in a commune in California are kicked off their land. They decide to move to Alaska, to really live off the land. But the people in Alaska aren't quite ready for this group of wild hippies, and the hippies aren't quite prepared for what's in store for them. It's a bit of culture shock for everyone, and it's interesting to see how the two groups adapt to each other. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is the coolest frickin book EVER!! Everyone in the world needs a copy, NOW! But seriously, It's awesome. There are 365 things to do in this book, one thing each day. You can do them in order or choose at random, but it truly will change your life. I've been a bit wussy about starting, as some of the things you're supposed to do are a little 'out there', and I don't know if it would be considered cheating if I were to skip the few that I find questionable. One of these is the old 'dine and dash', leaving a restaurant without paying, and I just don't relish the idea of screwing someone over or going to jail :) However, I plan to try to complete most of the little 'tasks' in the near future :)

I decided to read this book to my kids, who are ages 5 and 7, one chapter a night, at bedtime. At first they weren't too interested, and I was worried that the language was a little too archaic for them to really understand. However, after the first few chapters, the kids kept asking me to read more, and every night they were eager to find out more about the secret garden. They were always full of questions about the characters in the story, which gave us a lot to talk about together. This is one of the first books I have read to them in stages, and I think it's almost better than reading a whole story in one night. It gives them something to think about, and to look forward to each day. The Secret Garden is a great story for young and old alike.

This series is a lot of fun, once you get used to the idea that characters in books live in a separate reality, like a parallel universe. I enjoyed it very much. The series revolves around a woman named Thursday next, who is a literary detective.
