Pattigr

I am married and the mother of a 14 year old girl - what a challenge. I love reading Historicals, Romance, Time Travel and other paranormals.

I read about 3-5 books per week and especially love the books regarding Historical Great Britian, Scotland and Ireland - I do not for the most part enjoy American Historicals or Westerns or... more »

Jules Watson has a website if you want to check her out. It is www.juleswatson.com. I must confess that I bought the first one "The White Mare" because it was a beautiful hardback on clearance for 6.99 :), I never got around to reading it until my daughter (Jr in college) read it and told me that I'd love it. And, as I mentioned yesterday, Watson is such a good writer. But honestly, the paganism contained in the book, though well-researched, about drove me batty! But then, there really was a world like that once upon a time, and stonehenge still stands to prove it. I've very glad I read the series. I feel like a smarter man now. And weren't Croce's love songs the best! His soft acoutic flow was the reason that I told my dad (in 1972), "I want to learn to play the guitar". I still play his songs!

Have you read the trilogy of Historical fictions by Jules Watson? (The White Mare, The Dawn Stag ). They are set in first century Scotland when Rome was in the process of taking over the British Isles; Scotland (then called Alba) was much more reluctant to become a Roman Providence than southern Britian! The historical research is well done, the author an archeologist of that time and place. I didn't care so much for the books myself because the story occured in a time a paganism (the main character is a pagan priestess...druid...and her "spirituality" was one of the main focuses of the story). Because it was a time of Roman conquest, there is also quite a bit of archaic battle which I don't care much for, either. I only suggest them to you because you mentioned that historic fiction was your favorite genre, and these books are loaded with that! I could tell that the author's target audience was women, and being as though Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice are the top "girl books" of all time, I thought Jules Watson's books might be right down your alley. She is truly a gifted writer, and in spite of the fact that I didn't care much for the extended pagan rituals described, I am glad that I read the books. They are not silly sci-fi fantasy, but meticulously researched historic fiction about a time and place that most will never know about.

Patti - have you gone into Highlander's Kiss group lately? I'm not a member but was just browsing through various friends' sites and (!!) the avatar of that one on your site grabbed my interest (LOL). But when I tried to read/reply to any of the threads, I couldn't. In Shelfari Questions (I think), someone mentioned that an apostrophe in the group's name made a big difference, for some reason. I'm wondering if that's why - have you had a problem at all? I'll check with the admin of that group (if I can) and then note it in Shelfari Questions. Someone will maybe have to change the name of the group so there's no apostrophe. I don't know if it's a recent problem, but probably is.

    Hi Patti,
As you can see, I don't get to this site very often.
I've read The Blood of Roses, but didn't know there was a third in the series. I've also read Canham's Midnight Honor. I liked both of them. Two other authors I like are Hannah Howell and Johanna Lindsey. Oh, and Karen Marie Moning.
I finished my MA in May and now have time to get back to "FUN" reading. In the summer I tend to read one book after another with hardly a glance at the author and book title. My friends and I pass bags of paperbacks around our group and I just reach in and grab until the bag is empty. The ones I really like I keep and reread from time to time, the others I pass along.

Yeah, we don't share the westerns in common, but there are so many fabulous British Historicals to go through! LOL! I'll be looking up some of your favorite authors too.

I LOVE Philip Pullman's Dark Materials Trilogy! I read the first book in '98 and I've been a huge fan ever since.
As for the movie...meh...I watched it, but I didn't try to compare it to the books. I made that mistake with Eragon, it made me hate that film! Movie adaptations are never as good as what we can picture in our head :D

Thanks for the add!! Yeah, there's nothing quite like Scotland...or it's weather, lol! Summer sun and high temps at the beginning of the week, at the end of the week people were making snowmen...yes, that's in June!
It's great that you love the countries of your ancestors, Scotland and Ireland are similar and at the same time they have their own stories and their own uniqueness

I haven't seen the newest Jane Eyre, so it's on my "need to look for" list. :-)

Thanks! That is, and probably will be, my favorite movie of all time. I only hope the romances I write can touch someone the way Pride and Prejudice touched me.

If you liked Diana Gabeldon you will enjoy Pride of Lions. Sounds like your interests are similar to mine. Have you read A Year and a Day by Virginia Henley? She's another author that you might enjoy.
