Hi Chris, I would like to suggest "the kite runner" by khaled houseini and "a thousand splendid suns" by the same author. Lovely books.

Hi there! I'm just dropping by to welcome you to The 100+ Book Challenge. I'm sorry but I've been out of town, so your welcome is a bit late. The idea of the group is pretty much self explanatory - try to read 100 or more books in a one year period. If you do have any questions, please feel free to send a message to me or Tenia. In the meantime, good luck reaching your goal!

mr chris c...a strange thing happened to me last year. i became addicted to the short story. it started with french authors from the 19th century..balzac....then a trip to insanity with gogol....jack london doing the man eating south pacific islands..etc..the short story seems to have been lost today. they are like drops of amber fossilized in time. i'm a history buff. facts are great. the short story transcends time throws you into the moment. you can smell the sweat, taste the fear, feel the meaness of a less compassionate societies, and the giddiness of happiness of love, surviving a typhoon or battle with a cannibal in just a few pages.

Yes, I love reading history! I used to teach American History at the junior high/middle school level, so I'm more versed in that area than world history. British history is my second favorite. Love all those kings and queen's stories and all the rest! I've listened to The Teaching Company's course on Ancient Egypt and now have the Roman History ones to listen to, but I've been too busy with other pursuits to start it. All their courses are excellent, btw.

Where do you live in Alabama? Mobile? I used to travel into Tuscaloosa regularly when I worked for a company based there. Much smaller than Mobile, but quaint in sections. I remember the fire ants though!

Thanks for the input. I plan to start "Pillars of the Earth" as soon as I'm up for a long read. I'll be traveling later this month, and I
d rather not be reading a long one when I'm interrupted so often. I looked at your shelf again and added a few to my wish list.

Enjoy "World Without End" and let me know if it is as good as other Follet classics.

I love your broad taste! It's another thing we have in common.

I liked it. It was good sci-fi plus good characterizations. It needs to be revived! It's still a very timely read!

Welcome to 1001 books. You can keep track of the books you have read from the book, 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, join in the discussions on the books we are reading for the month (BOTM) or you can debate the merits of the list as some enjoy doing. We hope you will want to join in the choosing of BOTM and the discussions. The current books are pinned to the top for that month. There are older discussions that can be found by searching discussions. If there is any way the group administrator can help further feel free to ask one of us. If you don’t own the book the list can be found at the top in the group description or at http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm?content_id=22845. A downloadable list of the second edition is available at http://johnandsheena.co.uk/books/?page_id=160.
