Mental Apparition

Alright so starting with the obvious: I LOVE to read books. I'm really into fantasy and horror/gothic novels. My favorite author is Poppy Z. Brite and my favorite novel is Lost Souls. I love how different Poppy's books are and I love the fact that all of her characters are gay! I also love Anne Rice but only her earlier work, none of her new... more »

lol how do you know how many words per minute you can read? Or the average? Read at your own pace, Jamie. :3 Enjoy the book. Savor it. I wish I read slower, or that I could. I go through books so quickly I don't have enough time to properly enjoy them.

Yes, her modern fairy stories are great. :-D
And if into horror, I got a Lovecraftian story of mine, "Azathoth is Here" accepted for first issue of this new online Lovecraft horror zine, Innsmouth Press that starts in June. Here's their link: http://www.innsmouthfreepress.com/ .

I checked out his catalogue on Amazon and wow, he's got a lot of stuff out. I see where they made a comparison to King's The Stand (one of my favorite books in the world) and Needful Things (never read). I've really been out of the horror genre for a long time. Except for Exquisite Corpse, I've been reading almost exclusively contemp romance, erotic romance, and paranormal romance for the last decade or so (probably because it's what I write). I'm reading Intensity by Dean Koontz in addition to the Ione book, but it's slow going and I've been reading it for several weeks. Not because it's slow or bad. It's just my bedside book and I only read it every once in a while. Not a good idea to read before bed though. It's very...intense (guess I shouldn't have it at my bedside, huh ;) I used to read Koontz a lot a long while back, then just stopped (I think I read several books in a row where the endings just seemed anticlimactic and I got turned off). Just started another book (bike book) called The Abduction by Mark Giminez. It's crime/thriller/suspense and pretty good so far. I read a legal thriller by him a little while back that was good, but I can't remember the title. Speaking of The Stand, I read a book a few years ago called 8 Days by Barri L. Bumgarner that was similar but had a voice and charm all its own. Very good book I'd recommend. Have you read any Octavia Butler? She's science fiction (but not the techy, hard-core stuff. More the social commentary stuff). Her last book (published a little before her death) was a vampire story called Fledgling that you might be interested in. I love everything she's ever written, but that was her first vampire story.

    Wow, I've been rambling!

    Hope you're having a great week :)

Since it looks like you writer horror, try Northern Haunts: 100 Terrifying New England Tales. I have a story in it, but read all the other 99 and they were really good. The editor is up for two Bram Stokers this year for couple other anthologies and his magazine, Shroud Magazine on long list for a British fantasy group's award. It's both in hard cover and trade paperback.
And check out the other books on my shelves. I read more than then what's on it, but with writing my own stuff, hard to keep up with what i read. My own books on shelves too. I'll be adding my newest one of my own, Haunted Virginia--that's nonfiction--as at publisher's now and ready to be out.
I love Holly Black--saw you read her fantasies.

Well, they turn me off but if they aren't significant to the story and if the book is really good, I can ignore it.

Oh, I love man love! ;)

I'm about ready to go on a little spree the end of the month once JR Ward's latest comes out. I just started this new paranormal series by Larissa Ione, The Demonica series. The first one is Pleasure Unbound and I"m enjoying it a lot. Ready to buy the next two books :)

    Hi S,

I know you will like EC and I know what you mean about growing your book piles with new books before you even get to your old ones. It's why I never feel like I make a dent because the minute I do, I already have a new batch on order ;)

Well she didn't say she regretted the books she wrote before but I don't think I'm going to read "Christian fantasy". It's a shame but it's an author's choice. :(

No, not Interview with the vampire. I loved that one. She actually wrote man love?! *faints*

No, it wasn't that book that I didn't like. It was another one...when I find out the title I'll tell you.

She became Catholic and decided to only write about Jesus' life?!...How boring! Anne Rice?! Nah. It can't be! (I refuse to believe it... :()

I searched before and nothing...maybe I'll have more luck in the future. ;)

Yeah, I think I only read the first 3, the rest weren't in my library and I couldn't find them anywhere.

Did you like a book of Anne Rice that talked about a doll shop and Lestat?! I don't remember the title but I swear it was so boring. Claudia died and when Claudia died I thought Anne Rice was going to put man/man love (even if non-explicit) in the book but no! Not even a hint...you can picture my face... :(

    That's ok.

Yeah, I read it and I liked it a lot.

I notice that a lot of the books you read are fantasy/SF.

That's very cool. I like them also but I also like other types as you can see by my shelf.

Yeah, I always imagined myself in the place of the girl of the Mediator...with a hot ghost living in her room...why couldn't I have one too?! :(
