I want to be entertained. That entertainment may evoke emotions or cause me to think and/or become passion about a cause or discussion. I love to read fiction - drama, comedy, suspense and crime/mystery. I generally read Black authors, but anything that strikes my interest will do. I don't read much of the new urban fiction genre because... more »

    Hello:
If you love Black fiction, then you are in for a treat as I am on the verge of introducing you both a book and an author that will make glad that you can read. I take great pleasure in humbly suggesting that you acquaint yourself with the work of Gibran Tariq. All of his novels possess such lyrical charisma that the words literally leap off the pages. This is no jest or exaggeration. He writes with an undeniable passion and as a bonus, as if good writing is not enough, he deals with topics relevant to the black community.

Gibran Tariq's most recent novel, released last week is entitled "When I Say Jump". It is a legal thriller on par with anything John Grisham has ever written. It is the story of Elizabeth Sellers, a recent Howard University law graduate, whose first case could very well be her last. When she takes on the case of four black toddlers injured at a day care, she stumbles upon a government conspiracy to imprison one out of every four black males born in the country. Trust me, you won't be able to put the book down. It can be found on Amazon.com

He also has a book of daily affirmations for African-Americans called SNAPSHOTS. Below is the SNAPSHOTS for 2day and 2morrow.

    January 16
Don’t be embarrassed. There is no need to be modest when the voice that does the bragging comes from within. –ali-

Don’t launch yourself toward any goal, seeking to confirm someone else’s expectation because you can never be enhanced through the vicarious holding-on-to-someone-else’s dream. All that can possibly result from such a relationship is the negative possibility of you learning how to greet yourself as a stranger. Always recall vividly that you are not here as a gift to someone else’s effort to live twice or as a hobby for a mentor. You are here to inherit just those things that you need to become fully and wholly YOU. And for that-------there is no partnership. At some point and time, you must seek out this lonely thought and let it inspire you. At 1st, starting out, since you will be unsure of what role you play with yourself, you cannot expect specific solutions to your problems, but still honor the messages that you will receive from within. They will provide you with all the information you need to keep you nurtured in the warmth of your own potential. In contrast to the outer world, the inner sanctum is orderly and precise where the only voice heard is your own. Listen to this voice. All you will hear is how great you are.
    January 17
Today is nothing more than a pat on the back. Tomorrow is a hug and a kiss. –ali-

Tomorrow is always something more. It is a new season of hope where you are vested with a different chance to end a bad habit, start a new diet, or to fashion a better life. Inside the fresh environment of a new day exists seeds of commitment. These seeds are the natural wonders of your inner world and from them spring the vision under which you will labor to either despair, impair, or repair yourself. Don’t you know that it is from your sense of purpose that your soul paints its self-portrait? The universe will not award you anything until you possess an identity. The state of being only allows you the awareness of your senses. The art of becoming permits you to exercise them. In the larger perspective, it is not enough just to BE. The decision must be made to BE MORE! Once you reach the magnificence of this long-awaited acknowledgment, you will be able to fully recognize that the beauty of your individuality in no way contrasts with the diversity of the world, so you can now make your own way and still be at home. Give thanks to tomorrow by throwing it a “Baby shower” today. This is how you hug yourself with open arms.
    January 18
It is better to achieve than to receive -ali-

At every fork in the road on your journey to successful living, there are many distinctions to be made. One such distinction to be reckoned with is the line between what you ACHIEVE and what you RECEIVE. While there is never any uncertainty about what you receive, the same is not true with what you achieve since many people go through life filled with doubt about their achievements. An achievement is the personal nourishment of your individual worth whereas receivership is merely the reassurance that you exist. Once you make the discovery of which is which, you will be able to understand the intricate synchronization between probabilities and possibilities, knowing which is a celebration of your merits and which is an invocation of chance. Don’t make a career out of waiting-to-receive because sometimes the hand-outs stop. What then? You are only limiting yourself and producing a sterile atmosphere for disappointment. Explore the possibilities of your individual merit by achievement. It is a happy appointment with yourself.

Hey Love Black fiction! I was happy to hear from you! I agree once again, I love my black authors. It is just that I do deviate from time to time because of the need to experiment with different story lines. This is why I so enjoyed your intro and browsing your shelf. You have a few up there that caught my eye. Since we are on the quest for the same thing, I hope you will let me know when you come across a great read. I'll be checking in on you and it is nice to finally meet a fellow Texan! I bet the weather in Long Beach is a whole lot cooler than the temps we are seeing here. I used to live near Lompoc and I really miss the weather. :)

Hello! I enjoyed browsing your shelf and I agree that many authors have become redundant. I also love entertaining reads and I love a meaningful/humorous/well written storyline. I am in search of some new authors right now and am hoping Shelfari can provide me with a range of materials to choose from too. I haven't listed all my reads either. I'm still organizing and trying to make a few entries on my most memorable reads. I notice you Like Valerie Wilson Wesley. I have several of her books but haven't read her yet. Your remarks about J Gaston piqued my interest. I am following you, feel welcome at my spot anytime. Here's to some new and exciting books in our future! Have a Fantastic weekend!

    Thanks for the quick response!

I am sorry to hear your unable to purchase the book due to the expense. You will not find this book in the public
library.I definitely wanted to make the book affordable for everyone because the message is extremely important and it is a great read.

Well you might want to go to amazon.com and read the first seven chapters for free. There are a total of thirty
    nine chapters in the book.

If possible please send a note and let me know what you think after reading the seven chapters on amazon.com.

This book is highly passionate, extremely emotional and will definitely force you to think like you never have
before.THE ENDLESS HOUR will also cause discussions and force you to look deeply within yourself.

Again I am extremely sorry due to the expense.

    Best Wishes,
    Jesse

If you love black fiction then you will my novel SOLITAIRE MONGOOSE. I don't consider my novels to african-american in nature but that is just the way I write them. Not only is it entertaining but it will keep you on the edge of your seat as you read each line. You can go to http://redleadbooks.com/somo.html or call 1 800 834 1803 and purchase it. You won't regret supporting a african-american author. Hope you enjoy all your other reading!

I'm reading Till You Hear From Me now. It is really an interesting story. I am a big fan of Pearle Cleage. This book is very contemporary in its storyline. I think you'll like it.

Thanks for the invite to be friends. I appreciate it.

My mom got me hooked on audio books. I am a multi tasker and I really love to listen to books while doing something else. The Groit Audio selection is outstanding. The readers do an exceptional job of story telling. Our local library has a nice selection of audio books period. There are stories that I might not have selected in book form but I fell in love with in audio form.
