hi nice to meet you too my sons are 23 and 25 and yes mine live away from me in Missouri and they love living close to their grandfolks . yes whistling in the dark was an awesome book and bought it with a gift certificate and best book I ever bought and now loaned it to someone and it is gone . I no longer loan my books lol . You just gotta hope for the best with kids .
I think it was a mistake not to have piloted RLA this year and figure out the bugs - I feel somewhat unprepared and I am on the committee! I also don't like the idea that those of us who wrote the curriculum are supposed to teach everyone else about it. Oh, well, we'll just have to help each other through it. Are you going to do the CAFE/Daily 5 book club this fall]
I agree the title Why Students Don't Like School is misleading--I imagine the publishers thought the title would help sell the book. I had a better idea of what to expect, though, because I've read Willingham's column in the American Educator (aft.org) for years. In fact, the book is based on his columns there and there's an excerpt from the book in a recent issue. I love the American Educator; you can read most of it online.
I've read ...And the Ladies of the Club several times, and enjoyed it every time. The period details are fantastic, especially the politics of the times. She does have several other books, including one available on Easicat--Herbs and Apples, I think. I've never read it; her early books did not age well apparently.
