I like books. Lots of different kinds of things. I'm usually accused of having a fondness for esoteric historical biographies and obscure modern classics, but I also like to read books that are popular and up for discussion. And anything that sounds completely different.

Hello, history sister! I figured I'd follow along, since we have 50% of the books on my shelf in common. (I think we have good taste.) I see you've read "Cinderella Ate My Daughter". Did you take anything away from it? A worthwhile read?

There you are! I've been wondering why I haven't seen you around PBT lately and hoping it's fun stuff that's keeping you away.

Awesome! I'm not even sure where in IL that is, but I live right on the border between WI and IL. Cool that there is someone else from the midwest in our group.
    Nice shelf!

Hi I just had a look through your shelf and you're one of the few people I know who also gave "Heart Of Darkness" a low rating. :) All my other shelfari friends seem to love that book but I wasn't that impressed.

Hi Mary, Sorry it's taken so long to respond. The past two weeks, I've been crazy busy with an author trying to help her finish up her book on quilting. The manuscript went out the door this morning, so I am feeling rather free at the moment.

Your travel options sound very exotic! The only trips I have planned at the moment are my annual "unplugged" getaway to Mendocino on the Northern California coast (house overlooking the ocean, can't wait!) and a trip to Florida in early January to visit my mother-in-law to celebrate her 92nd birthday. Trying to work out a time to visit my friend and her husband in Bristol, UK sometime in the new year, with a possible side trip to Italy, but so far we haven't found a time that works for all of us.

It's been a while since I've read anything English-history related, but I'm feeling the gap, so I've picked up Mary Lovell's book about Bess, Countess of Shrewsbury to start when I finish my current read. Despite my constant assaults, my tbr stack continues to build to staggering proportions. It seems that for every book I read, another five go on the stack. Told my husband that I definitely do not want a Kindle (or similar device) for Christmas or my birthday (Dec 24). I've got to whittle down my pile of "real" books before I even consider it. If I were still traveling for business the way I used to, I'd probably think differently, but for now, I can do without.

Book club (or one of them) tonight. We're discussing The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, which I didn't particularly care for. The discussions are always interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing friends, so I'll be going regardless.

Hope you are well. Keep me posted on what you're up to. Darra

Turkey is really high on my list too. Until the Earthquake. That all sounds very cool. Malaysia is cool. Very inexpensive once you are there.

I have been to Prague. I was pretty "meh" on it. My sister goes to Indonesia all the time. Inexpensive there as well. She's going next week, I think she got a round trip from San Francisco for under $1000.

I read the intro last night, her writing very cool.

My top places I WANT to go: South Africa, New Zealand, and ack - other places I've already forgotten but it will come to me at some point. Malaysia was really interesting. I loved Australia. I'd skip China. But you know, I REALLY want to go back to Spain. I want to go places that aren't like the places I've already been. That's the trouble with Europe. It's all kind of the same.

Hi Mary, It's been ages since we've been in touch. It has been a ridiculously busy autumn so far, but I'm coming to the end of a series of deadlines. In fact, I'm looking forward to the holidays to slow things down a bit (and that's saying something!).

I thought of you as I read "The Favored Queen" by Carolly Erickson. It was probably one of the worst, if not THE worst, pieces of Tudor historical fiction I've ever read. I can't even begin to imagine what you would say about it. Here's my review:

[[This novel of Jane Seymour, third wife of Henry VIII, was beyond bad: a laughable smorgasbord of poor, cliche-ridden writing; one-dimensional characters; ridiculous plot twists; and annoying anachronisms. I stayed with it only to see how far off the deep end Erickson would go. I won't be reading another of her (self-described) "historical entertainments" any time soon.]]

I love how she calls her novels "historical entertainments"...as if that is an excuse for coming up with the MOST far-fetched fiction. She even goes so far as to put a caveat at the end, which begins: "Once again, dear reader, a caution and a reminder..."

But enough ranting. I hope you are doing well. Any travel coming up in the next few months? Darra
