I love to buy them. I love to read them. I love to touch them and talk about them... books that is

I was raised by two readers. My Mom read. My father collected. They still do.

And now I'm married to a life-long reader and collector.

Life can't get better than a house full of books and people who love... more »

It's so cool to hear that you're checking out my blog! I hope you enjoy. :) I've been just getting into "food" books over the past year or so, but have fallen for them hard core. I love food writing! I'm trying to catch up with classics (like M. F. K. Fisher) and also trying to stay current with the new books (I loved "A Homemade Life" by Molly Wizenburg). It's been fun connecting with you here and on Twitter - I look forward to more book and food chat! :)

Hi Eleanor- I am soooo sorry I overlooked your message entirely- I see that you wrote it a couple of weeks ago- I haven't spent much time on Shelfari lately- I have been caught up in the Facebook craze. I think for the BBD group you have to get one of the group admins to invite you- you have to write them a note and they will say nay or yeah- I believe Rob and Suze were admins when I joined. As for indie bookstores I don't travel widely outside of my part of the state- so I can't help much...I hope this finds you well and you have a nice Mother's Day. Keep in Touch. Jason

I've got quite eclectic tastes when it comes to reading - not reading sure I have a favourite author to be honest, although I have read a lot of Patricia Cornwell, Stephen King, Dean Konntz and Sophie Kinsella - all pretty modern stuff, and I'm in a very "classic" and "modern classic" phase at the moment :)
I've never heard of Junot Diaz so I will definitely check the book out - I'm always open to recommendations from fellow book-worms :)
Have you read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas?

Hi Eleanor- yes I am a big Bukowski fan and I do indeed live down the road from you in Aiken, SC. I only own about 12 Bukowskis, but I've read many more. The only novel that I haven't read is "Hollywood", but I own a copy of it and hope to get to it soon.

Thanks for the note. and again thanks for the add. I went through your entire shelf a couple nights ago - very impressive - plus we have much in common. I subscribe, on and off to McSweeney's. I am now, for the first time, subscribed to their book club, also. That is ten McSweeney book relases for 2009 for 10 bucks each. I have also been a subscriber to Wholphin but found I didn't always watch them so I quit that.

yes - that is an amazing company, I agree.

Hello Eleanor, from the books & bicycles & Bukowski guy. Great photo -- I have several "happy cats" scattered throughout my house and office. Don't know if they bring luck or not, but they make me smile every time I look at them, and that counts too.
    Happy reading.

Count me as a friend, with the disclaimer that my note-writing is infrequent. Glancing through your shelves I see that we share many" read" and" plan to read" selections. Also that our interests run the gamut from thriller mysteries to more "literary" (whatever that means) works. I rarely read nonfiction but am at the moment enjoying "The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher" -- a Victorian era murder mystery featuring the efforts of one pioneer Scotland Yard detectives. Though I own shelves and shelves of books, my local librarian called me "valiant" in the use of the library and issued me a less-tattered card. My husband reads as much as I, but his book pile weighs heavily toward the current political, economic, scientific, etc. landscape. For fun he reads and rereads SciFi, not fantasy. I am surprised when Shelfari members ask, "Should I read?..... as if one reader's experience bears any relationship at all to another's. But that's just me (I).

Welcome to the group. It is a large group that has formed around the book 1001 books you should read. Some own the book and some don't. Some like to debate the merits of the books and suggest ones that would have been better. Some group members actually try to read some of the books. You can start a list of the books you've read if you want. Many do that. You will lose your list but can find it by searching in the group for you list, so give it a title you will remember. Some of us have been trying to pick a book to discuss each month. We have been going alphabetical. In April we read, Life & Times of Michael K by Coetzee, March we read The Sea by Banville and Jane Eyre by Bronte and in February we read the Handmaid's Tale by Atwood. Reading an older book and a newer book is a good idea too. I think we could have chosen something like Wilkie Collins book The Woman in Whitee as an older C book. You of course can suggest books for us to read, add to the discussions or you can start new discussions. Again welcome to the group and I hope you will enjoy it.
