Mrs. Beggs

Mrs. Beggs

I am currently a sixth grade teacher at an elementary school. I have been an avid, passionate reader since I was young. I remember BEGGING my parents to take me to the library and/or bookstore to stock up on my book choices for the week. One of my fondest memories from childhood is when I ended up with chicken pox the very first week of summer... more »

This is a book that is a must have for middle school and hs libraries, especially for boy readers, when it is released in the fall. Girls would enjoy it too.

Interesting enough that I want to read the next one, but I won't be in any hurry. Fans of twilight I think will enjoy Evermore - I saw many similarities.

An excellent story about the prejudices that teens can have in wealthy neighborhoods. I though the characters were well developed and redeeming.

Listened to the audiobook, and it was FANTASTIC!! And the story itself will be enjoyed by anyone who loves the Toy Story movies.

Excellent historical fiction novel, coming of age story with great voice! The writing is excellent, and I loved the main character, Abilene. She was a confident youngster who believed in herself, but was hungry to learn more about who her father was and how she connects with his life.

If you're into a pirate-like tale, then this would be for you. Adventure on the sea and coasts of a post-apocalyptic world. Nailer has an abusive father, is a scavenger, poor, hungry, and trying to live to see another day. After a massive hurricane hits them, he finds a beached ship with riches galore. And then comes across the princess aboard the ship, who is still alive and worth tremendous amounts of money. Nailer then finds himself on a journey that takes him away from the only life he's ever known, hoping to create a new and better one.

Very well written and an excellent story, but overall I found it very dark. I felt the ending was wrapped up a bit too quickly for my taste. Personally, I've never really been able to get into stories set on wrecked ships, a "pirate-like" tale. But it's a book I will still recommend.

  • How Do You Spell Geek?
    • Rated 3 stars

Ann Keller has a lot to deal with this eight grade year: her parents have just recently divorced, her mom moved away, she and her best friend, Kimberly, are studying to get into The National Spelling bee, and she has just been asked by the principal to sponsor the new student, Lurlene, who is a little... different.

Lurlene quickly becomes the class target of bullying. Therefore, Ann is quickly realizing things she hadn't seen before in the people around her, including Kimberly and the boy Ann oh-so-desperately wants to go out with.

I think this book would be a good fit for reluctant and struggling readers. It is a quick and easy read of 139 pages with an easy plot line to follow. There are characters and school situations that are easy to relate to for young readers and the story line starts off very quickly.

An excellent realistic fiction graphic novel based off the author's personal experiences with having braces through junior high and high school. This is a book all tweens and teens can relate to, even if the main character is female. Also deals with other normal changes girls go through, wondering about boys, and figuring out who your real friends are.
