    True Blue

Terrible. So bad I couldn't even get to page 100. Might be my last Baldacci. His heroines are increasingly insufferable.

Interesting. Lacks the depth of character to be a really compelling read. Is better in the first half than in the second.

Thin, as in insubstantial in every way. Disappointing in it's rip off of Steinbeck's... oh, wait. that would be a spoiler. Reader beware.

This was at once a funny and poignant story. I could never predict where it was going, but I was 100% along for the ride.

Amazing book. The dark side of American society in the 60s. Assasinations, Vietnam, Nixon, The Mob, Howard Hughes, Castro, Haiti, the CIA, J. Edgar Hoover. Money, power, racism, communism, hate, lust and love transforming the country through the actions of key players and fictional characters. Essentially, the dark side of "the pursuit of happiness." Compelling.

Couldn't muster the energy to finish this one. Got a little over halfway through and decided I wouldn't waste any more of my life on such dullness. I was a little wary of starting it, knowing it was about a screen-writer/college professor with college professor parents. Ho hum. I don't think I've ever read a compelling novel about college professors.

Total dud. Nothing happens. Strained connections everywhere. Just a big nothing. I have read this author's first 2 books, and enjoyed them. I think he assumed it was easy to write a spy thriller. It isn't, especially for Stephen Carter.

Loved it when I read it, but I was only 12 years old.

  • The Education of a Coach

Very readable study of how one particularly successful NFL coach built his career. Unlike many people, Bill Belichick always knew what he wanted to do and never wavered in his pursuit of his career goal. While it wasn't obvious to most of us casual professional football fans, insiders knew how talented he was early on. Now, of course, the world knows that Belichick is surely among the two or three greatest coaches of all time. David Halberstam writes so well that this book reads like a good novel. The 265 pages slide by quickly. I recommend it.

I'm re-reading in preparation for the third book in the trilogy. I'm amazed how much I'm enjoying this the second time around. I would like to see these books as a mini-series on HBO.
