My name is Tiffany...aka Alura. I am 38 and reading is a large part of my life. I will read just about anything if it can spark my interest. Ever since I read Edgar Allen Poe, I have been into reading and literature became my best subject in school. I love reading horror and I enjoy the vampire, shape-shifter and demon type books as well. I... more »

I love to read just about everything. Kahlil Gibran, Dean Koontz, Philippa Gregory, David Moody and Jonathan Maberry. I seem to be in a dystopian mood lately. There is soo many books to read and not enough time. I'm usually reading two to three books at a time. The feel of a book, the smell and...

I hate to see the Sookie Stackhouse books end as I have really enjoyed this series as a whole. As for this final installment: it had an It's A Wonderful Life vibe to it that I found really touching. A lot of plotlines get tied up and Sookie finally ends up with the right person-hallelujah!...

Atticus O'Sullivan is a wonderful charactor. I'd have to say that is his Irish Wolfhound Oberion is my favorite charactor of the books. To be honest though I liked most of the charactors, even the charactors that were designed to be evil were fleshed out wonderfully.

I found myself laughing out loud at quite a few parts. I love the action and history of lore that Mr. Hearne used to write these books. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a very entertaining read it will have you holding your breath, giggling out loud at the interplay with the characters and then throw in a cringe or two thrown for good measure. Very good read!

    Doc Savage: Skull Island

First a little historical footnote: Skull Island is only the third Doc Savage adventure to appear under a name other than Kenneth Robeson, which was the "house name" the original Doc Savage novels were published under in the 30's and 40's. Doc's creator, Lester Dent, saw his name accidentally included on the cover of The Derelict of Skull Shoal in March of 1944. In July of 1991 Philip Jose Farmer, esteemed SF author and ardent Doc fan, wrote his own Doc Savage novel: Escape From Loki. Now Will Murray, who has been writing the new Doc Savage adventures under the old byline of Robeson, has published Skull Island.

Skull Island features a unique "team up" of a young Clark Savage Jr and King Kong. Yes that's right I said King Kong, and believe it or not the idea actually works as both Kong and Doc are treated with respect. The action starts when Doc returns to NY to find a dead Kong literally on his doorstep. (This confirms what every Doc fan has always "known" which is that Doc's offices were always located in the Empire State Building.) Tasked with disposing of the body by the mayor Doc surprises everyone by declaring that he has encountered Kong before. The rest of the tale is told in flashback as Doc tells his own story-World Was One has ended and Doc and his father set out to rescue his grandfather "Stormalong" Savage who had disappeared some years before. Following a thin trail of clues they come to Skull Island...

Lots of interesting moments in this book: we get to see Doc develop the superfirer pistols used in so many later adventures. We see him purchase the warehouse that will eventually become the Hidalgo Trading Company. This novel takes place before Doc develops his "no killing" philosophy too and it is a real eye-opener as in this adventure Doc is a killing machine. Doc's father is prominently featured and we finally get to learn what kind of human being lets his only son be raised by scientists to become something more than human. If you guessed Doc's dad is a jackass you got that right.

This novel is slow in places and I feel it is padded by a few too many pointless battles between Doc and a particularly vicious band of "savages" who have also come to Skull Island-they must have arrived in the hundreds as the supply of goons seems inexhaustible. I think this is some poor writing on Murray's part, and I don't care much for they way Murray has reworked Doc's family tree. Murray states in the "About the Author" section of the book that this novel is a dramatic departure from previous Doc Savage tales which is why he published it under his own name. All in all the unique glimpse we get into Doc's early life is not a satisfying experience and I hope to see the name Kenneth Robeson on the spine of the next Doc novel I read.
