I am a middle school teacher whose wife reads more than he does. I am looking to change that. My reading tastes are not as eclectic as some, but flexible nonetheless. I really enjoy a story with a good character as much as I do a good story - it is the writer in me. I am also a writer - not published yet, but hopefully one day:)

    Greetings CROAH member!

We are now accepting nominations for the next group read to cover the fourth US President, James Madison.

Please send your suggestions via one of 2 ways:

    a) a private note to either Regina or Dog Lover (this method reveals your email address to us), or

    b) use the "Questions About this Group" text box found on the member's tab. This sends an email to both administrators and masks your email address.

Please do NOT post your nomination to the site's discussion tab.

Please include the title, author, and brief description of the book. It would also be nice if you included the Shelfari book page URL.

Nominations will be accepted through the 18th. Nominations will be posted and voting will take place through the 25th. We will post the selected book on the 26th.

Because we are approaching the Holidays a revised schedule will be followed for the remainder of 2009 and beginning of 2010. We will vote for the Madison read in October, post discussion questions in November, skip December, vote on Monroe reads in January, and post discussion questions in February.

A suggestion has been made to continue the extended reading schedule past the Holidays and provide 2 months between book selections. We would be interested in hearing anyone's thoughts on this. Would it help you? Would you lose momentum? Are you too busy to participate on the current schedule.

Please post your comments on this proposed scheduling change to the nomination thread found at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/discussions/146618/James-Madison-Nominations-are-Open

The four books we've chosen since the group started have been fabulous. We look forward to seeing the nominations for the fifth.

    Thanks,

    Regina & DL

    Greetings CROAH members!

The nominations are in for the CROAH September group read about Thomas Jefferson.

You'll find the ballot at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/discussions/137240/Vote-for-Thomas-Jefferson-Reads---September-2009

    This is a "ballot" therefore...

    Please vote only once.

Please indicate only a vote "for" - do not vote against a title.

Please do not include any sales talk or justification for your vote - just "yae" or "for".

The last 3 reads have been just fabulous. With this range of nominations, it looks as though we'll have another winner for our 4th group read!

Thanks so much to all of you who submitted nominations - great job!

    Lookin' forward to your votes,

    DL

    Alvin,

I don't have Water for Elephants on there, but it's one I've been thinking about. Glad to hear someone liked it! I also like all the professional books you have on your shelf; that's one area I really need to dive into more--so I'll probably be stealing some of those titles too! One that I would highly recommend to you (or two, actually) are Maus I and II by Art Spiegelman. They're graphic novels about the Holocaust and are very well done. Yes, Robert and I do have a lot of books in common; we teach in the same English department and are in the same book club! It's nice to have someone to bounce reading ideas off of like that. That's why this site is nice!
Have a good day; hope it's sunnier where you are. I'm getting tired of the rain!

I picked up the American arguments book for a class I co teach with a friend - American Studies. We combined American Lit and History - we read works from the corresponding time periods at the same time the students are studying the history parts - GREAT CLASS! This books has some good discussion starters. What I like best is that he advocates arguing these points - very important for this class - I am looking forward to using parts of it next year. Don Quixote is a hefty read - one of those book I always meant to get to - I try to read those types in the summer. I am enjoying it very much- but it is a difficult read, I really have to concentrate on it. Give it a try, not much like the musical though.

Thanks for the tip! I haven't read it yet as I'm trying to wind my way through my own bookshelf first, but a trip to the library may be in order. Enjoy your summer as well!!

Thanks for helping make CROAH a great resource for learning more about the USA's history by examining each of its Presidents.

    Alvin,

I read all the time. I feel it's really important to show our kids that we value reading too--if we want them to read, we have to read. I'm glad you like some things that you see--if you have any suggestions, send them my way. I'm always looking for new thing to read.

School got out right before Memorial Day weekend for us, so summertime's officially here! Hope you're enjoying it too!

    Hi Alvin,
Yes, I am an educator (good call!) although not a classroom teacher anymore. At this point in my career, I'm a district administrator who works with teachers to integrate technology. We have some teachers who blog. We use WordPress and open it to those on request. Blogspot and other blogs, unfortunately, are blocked in our district. We are working to open these sites up but it's a challenge. We are making progress though. Here is an example of what our Library Media Specialists are doing with our students, district wide: http://pbspaces.com/botb/

    I hope this helps.
