Books, dogs, cats, quilting, children (of all ages) - that's what I love.
In 2nd grade I had hepatitis & missed 3 months of school. As this was more than a few years ago we had no electronic games, tv, radio or even children's books. My parents were readers so there was plenty to read. Robinson Crusoe was first & I've never stopped since. more »

Glad your enjoying it, I really loved it.

I've been reading some Manga (graphic novels) on line. My daughter really got me into it and this one I finished (From Far Away) was a really interesting story. Simple, light, fun, adventure, romance. What more could you want, and great graphic pictures. Some of those people are sooooo talented. But I'm going back to Alexander's Cipher since it is getting really interesting.

No I haven't. I just started reading some of her's now and I'm trying to finish the Second Summoning, i think its called. I do like them, she has a sense of humor I like. I'll have to get that thru an inter library loan. I've taken out of the libraray at the moment, Alexander's Cipher and it's really interesting (I've only read the first 3 chapters so far).

Our library isn't large either and we can sure use more room. They are trying to find a bigger building in town but so far the one they liked was too expensive. Since I work in the library at least I get to see the new books coming in and can put my name on them when they are ready to go on the shelf.

Elantirs was great, and you don't need to read that first before Warbreaker since both books are stand alone stories.

This summer here in NJ has been more like spring, not very hot and lots of rain. But that means I don't have to water my lawn, not that I do anyway, just the flowers I plant. Altho with all the rain it makes it hard to get rid of all the weeds. LOL!

I see you are going to read the Second Summoning by Tanya Huff. I'm half way thru and really like it. I read the first one and thought it was a hoot. Loved it. I've read a few by her recently and enjoyed them.

I see that Warbreaker is also on your list. I finished it quite recently and I thought it too was great. I've read Elantris by Brandon Sanderson also and loved it. I think you will enjoy both. He really goes into detail about background which really is important but doesn't make it boring or long winded, if you know what I mean.

Hope your summer was good to you.

Oh wow! Just seen the pictures of The Crazy House - that is remarkably like Gaudi's architecture. You can definitely see the influence Gaudi has had on the building. One website actually describes is at "Georgia O'Keefe meets Gauidi meets Lewis Carroll". I don't know what to make of that but it is certainly out of this world!!!

    Hi Eva,

No, shamefully, I have not managed to finish Eats, Shoots and Leaves - although I must pick it up again because it is SUCH a great book! I think my other half nicked it and, as ever, he has read about 4 pages. I will steal it back and get on with it. You're right - this is a book to own!! I must admit I get a bit of a thrill from buying novels - I can't help it!! Some buy shoes, I buy books but I'm good, I often donate them to the local library when I'm done so others can enjoy too.

Yep, school went back last week and I started a job 3 weeks ago. It's been less stressful than I anticipated although my first day at work I put Jack into a local kids camp and when I picked him up he said "Where have you been? It's so late!" I was quite upset and in the car going home he was getting quite upset about the swimming issue and getting quite aggravated at me and I simply burst into tears. Of course, he felt guilty and started crying and saying "Sorry Mum" so we were in a bit of a state the first day but it's all settled down now!! I'm looking forward to my first pay cheque tomorrow after 4 years of not having one - whooopeeeeeee!!!!

Didn't manage to get that link you sent to work so I will have a rummage around the Internet to see the pics. Ohh, I heard someone in the office today say they were in Barcelona for a couple of days and I was speaking about it at the weekend and would so love to go back. BUT, saving up for the big Canada trip next year (fingers crossed).

No writing done to date but I was up in the wee hours this morning (getting to be a bit of a bad habit) and I was thinking about getting some writing for my children's book done. I just don't get the time now and I'm so tired at the weekend! I think that is something to save for Christmas when I'm moping around the house bored after Santa's been!! Hee hee!

Hope you are well and that the heatwave is over - is it ever over in Florida???

Thanks for clueing me in on LOL. Vacation in North Carolina in the mountains sounds great. I confess I have never been in North or South Carolina. I hear its beautiful.

Yes, I do live in Wisconsin, out in the country. It is lush and green in the summer. As the crow flies, I am located about 5 miles from the Mississippi river. I cross it every day to go to work in Winona, Minnesota.

Winona is a two university town located on the banks of the Mississppi. The library where I work, employs college students as student aides. I really enjoy working with this always changing group of (mostly) girls. Hopefully, they also enjoy working with an old lady like me. I am the oldest person working at the library. I could retire as I'm past 65, but I like it too much. My husband has been retired for a couple of years and keeps busy with playing golf.

You'll probably LOL when I tell that go even further north when we go on vacation. Our plan is to go as far as Lake Superior. First at a resort near Silver Bay, Minnesota, then east to Bayfield, Wisconsin, where my brother and his wife live, and then further east to the Porcupine Mountains, Michigan where we've rented a lakeside cabin. We are going with a couple from Austria (she's my former sister-in-law) who visit us every year in September. They are big into hiking. I do enjoy hiking, but since both Bob and I are kind of on the overweight side, we don't go as far.

I love to go kayaking and plan on bringing them. There are a lot of great places to kayak around here as there are a lot Mississippi backwaters that are a part of the National Wildlife Refuge system. I try to go out at least once a week.

Quilting for me is my winter/bad weather recreation. I am in the process of making a quilt from a jelly roll right now. During the summer it goes at a very slow pace, but that's okay. I belong to the Winona Area Quilter's Guild which meets once a month.
I got hooked into quilting when my daughter Laura took a quilting class about 15 years ago. Lately we've added a couple more family members to the world of quilting. There's a group of about ten of us that go on a weekend quilting retreat twice a year. Those are a lot of fun.

What kind of quilting do you like to do and how long have you been doing it?

You asked if I tell my patrons about Shelfari. I guess I haven't too much as I work mostly in the Children's Department. Actually it was one of our patrons that told ME about Shelfari. I did send invitations to Shelfari to the memebers of our book club, but only a couple joined and they are not very active.

How big a town is Hobe?

    Chris

Our summer this year has been rather on the cool side. Saves on the air conditioning! Summers here can be rather hot and humid.

Thank you for your response. I've been in Florida twice - during the summer -- but it has been about 40 years. What I remember is that even though it was hot, there was always a nice ocean breeze. I like having four seasons even though winter is way too long. About half of it would be quite enough!

Have you read any of John Hart's books yet? I couldn't put them down. Now I have to wait until he finishes his next one.
By the way, I keep seeing this LOL, but don't have a clue what it means. Is it "lots of luck"?

When you live in Florida, where do you go on vacations?

Did I mention that I work in a library?

Thanks for the friendship invitation. I see you are also a lover of dogs and cats. It looks like a yellow lab and two cats on your profile picture. I also have a yellow lab (more the color of a deer now) and one aged cat. I see we have read and liked some of the same authors - Nevada Barr, Dana Stabenow, Julia Spencer-Fleming, Sue Henry, etc.
I also love to garden- both flowers and vegetables. Our growing season here in Wisconsin is relatively short, but winters are certainly too long. Where is Hobe Sound in Florida? Anywhere near the ocean?
I am now reading "The last child" by John Hart, right after finishing his other two books, both of which I liked very much. They were hard to put down.

Oh man! I could NOT cope with that heat!! When I went to Egypt several years ago the temperature was 40oC (something like 100+F) and I had prickly heat, heat exhaustion, dehydration, upset stomach - you name it. I was even sick on our trip to the Valley of the Kings yet the locals were still shoving souvenir-tat under my nose and trying to sell it to me!! Eeesh!! That was way too hot for me!!

Yep, Gaudi's architecture was awesome. So intricate and quite dark, although much of it is inspired by nature and I guess it's the kind of good/evil concept inherent in nature. I'd also never heard of Gaudi but my pal studied him in high school so she knows all about him. I've heard of Frank Lloyd Wright but can't think of the buildings he's done. He's American, am I right? Yep, I do love good architecture - pity that doesn't describe the Scottish parliament building. Hideous!! Check it out on google images if you can. It's such an eyesore in such a historic place like Edinburgh.

Now, what am I reading. I picked up a book on holiday by a Belfast author simply known as Bateman. It is a crime fiction novel and although it's quite funny and was an easy read, it really didn't do much for me. I thought it was okay but not great. I'm now reading "Banquet for the Damned". It's a supernatural novel and I think I got it as a Christmas present. It's quite good to start with and I think will grip me but I'm in a bit of a funny mood at the moment and not really into reading!! Perhaps it's the book!!

Donna Andrews isn't any relation of Virginia Andrews is she? Perhaps just coincidence. I will check out some of her books and see if that inspires me to turn the pages again!

Hope the air conditioning holds out!! I can't believe I'm about to say this (living in Scotland) but I wish my bedroom had air conditioning. I finally convinced my other half to switch the heating off in the morning! I was roasting this morning!! Mind you - mustn't complain - I'd rather see the sun than black clouds and rain drops!

    Take care, speak soon!

Oh my word!! Barcelona is tremendous!! I want to go back and do all the things I didn't manage to do. I saw lots of Antonio Gaudi architecture (he has a very unique modernist style and uses lots of mosaics and natural world inspiration) but I didn't manage to get to Mount Tibidabo and the amusement park there; didn't get to go on a cable car or a boat trip; have just discovered that at Port Aventura, a short journey away, there is a Universal Studios tour; and I didn't get to the zoo or the sea world at the port!! So, I must go back. The temperature was around 28oC, which was comfortable in the shade but not when you're underground in the Metro station - very stuffy! The pace of life and La Rambla (which is the main thoroughfare in the old town) are truly fantastic. There's so much going on and loads of shops to browse around in. Didn't get to sample enough of the local fare, which is something I would definitely make a point of when I return. I would thoroughly recommend Barcelona to ANYONE! Met some English people and American tourists so the place is a haven for ALL tourists!!

Like you said - I was desperate to see Jack when I got back and he gave me a big hug at the airport and then held my hand all the way back to the car! Bless him! He doesn't like holding my hand now that he's a big boy but he didn't mind that day! Ah, it's good to get away but it's also nice to come home.

How are things with you? Are you guys having high temps just now too? I can't believe we have 23oC in Scotland today!! That must be global warming, eh?! Hee hee!

Awww, thank you! I know - there is some guilt attached with taking a week away but that's why Jack has two parents!! Hee hee!

I am so looking forward to the break, I can't tell you! I'm having a bit of a bum week this week so next week has GOT to be better!

I'll tell you all about the wonderful architeture, shops and sights on my return ...

    Take care

Ha ha!! I had to laugh at you joining a Procrastination Society and not getting round to it. Tee hee!! So you guys have got a cabin in North Carolina. That is so cool! You MUST have your quilt done by then. That sounds so blissful - a cabin, a quilt and some good books to read!! I know what you mean, though, I need deadlines otherwise I would just drift and have tons of unfinished projects. I think that's how I managed to get my degree done - deadlines! Speaking of which, I'll find out my classification in the next couple of days.

Well, I have my trip booked to Barcelona with my friend and we leave a week tomorrow. I am quite excited!! I get to leave my domesticity and run free for a few days! Weeeeeeee ....

No, I haven't read any of Randy Wayne's novels. Are they crime fiction? A character by the name of Doc Ford sounds like some kind of mystery solver to me! I will check them out on Amazon and see if one tickles my fancy! Isn't it funny how we get attached to one author? I guess that's what publicists are hoping for so that we'll be faithful customers! It's a testament to their writing skills that we keep coming back for more, though, I guess.

Okay, I'd better get on ... get quilting!! That cabin will soon be finished!

    Peace

Hi there! Sorry it's taken me a while to reply to your post, I have been out in the sunshine!! Yes, Scotland has finally seen some sunshine this year so we must grab it while we can!

Thanks for your congrats on my degree. Just over a month until official graduation ...

Oh, you must check out Blood Ties when it comes on - I like it for the extremely sexy vampire and the equally sexy cop!! What more could a girl ask for!! Hee hee!

Ah, so your kids have flown the nest then? I am still very much in mother-mode but I still manage to have time to myself during the day when my littl'un is at school! Although, that won't last much longer as I'm hoping to get a job after the summer.

Speaking of creative projects, I am so proud of myself. I've just hung the first piece of 'art' that I've ever done. It's pretty simplistic but I'll try and get a photo uploaded and let you see it. Following on from my success with that project I've just cut a stencil so that I can create some canvasses for my 'games' room. Hopefully I'll get those completed soon. I REALLY want to get on with writing my kids books this summer. I have promised my son that we will sit down and draft up the stories. I have the first one all in my head and I have the graphics but not quite all the characters yet.

Anyhoo ... what are you reading now? Do you read any Carl Hiaasen? His books are often set in Florida. Also, I recently read Duma Key by Stephen King and it was set in Florida. It was another extremely well crafted novel but perhaps not one for the tourist office!!

Hope you are well! Talk soon,
    Angela

Hi Eva, thanks for your message. I'm really getting into this site, it's pretty cool!

NO is Norfolk, the county I live in by the way! I've been to Florida, but not for a long time. It was amazing from what I remember and I loved the weather and the people :)

The last book I read was The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch by Philip K Dick. I've read one of his other books, Ubik and they are both (for want of a better word) insane! I don't think I've read a book like it before; it was almost depressing in parts but the wild, twisting plot and pace kept me entertained! How about yourself, what have you been reading most recently?

Yes I have heard that. LOL! But since my kids don't sew, much, and are not at this moment interested in quilting, I'm going to have to be sure there isn't much left when I go to the big fabric store in the sky. :-D So I've been making small quilts, baby size/lap size, and table runners to use up some of my stash. But what I'll do with all of them is something else. I have given them away to charities.

I remember Bratt Farr by Tey and love that one. I know I've read the others but that one sticks in my mind. She died when I was very young, before school. She didn't write that many books but the ones she did I enjoyed.

There are a number of Quilting groups on Yahoo Groups. I belong to StashBusters Group. I think you can tell was we talk about on that group, We of the large collection of fabric. Of course there are other groups on Yahoo dealing with quilting. I also belong to a quilting forum on About.com, and there are several there too. Everyone in these groups are very nice and always happy to help with your latest project, beginner or expert.

I've finished my latest book The Thirteenth House by Sharon Shinn. Really enjoyed that one and now I'm onto Dark Moon Defender, same author. Have read a few by this author and really like her. They are science fiction/fantasy.

Hi! Don't be too impressed by my profile - I often have a lot of grand ideas that I never get around to completing. The fact that I finished my degree is both an accomplishment and something of a miracle! I guess since I only have one child I have slightly more time to indulge myself in projects!

How old are your kids? To answer your question - no, I'm afraid I don't quilt. That seems to be more of an American tradition and less something that we do in Scotland. In fact, I can just about manage to sew buttons on an that's where my seamstress-ness ends! I would love to be able to make my own clothes and curtains, etc. but I just don't seem to have the gift.

I must ask - how was Twilight? I see you've read it and I know that it's been a big hit at the cinema and just wondered whether I should think about the books? I am SO into vampire stories - I love Blood Ties and Moonlight on TV - and since I was a little girl I remember my Mum watching Dracula movies. In fact, I used to be scared to go to sleep at night and insist on the covers being pulled up to my neck!!!

    Happy reading!! :-)
