My favorite Jodi Picoult book so far. Story of Chris and Emily who grew up together and were neighbors for 18 years. Suicide pact. I was pulled in from page 1. Good book!

  • They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky: The True Story of Three Lost Boys from Sudan
    • Rated 4 stars

I vaguely remember hearing about the lost boys of Sudan years ago. This is the story of three brothers from south Sudan. They become orphans at a young age due to war and are forced into survival mode. Benjamin, Alepho and Benson (and thousands more) experience what no young child should have to experience. From Sudan they walk to Kenya and into Ethiopia to a refugee camp. I was immediately drawn to these boys and their story. I can't imagine how these "babies" made it and many didn't make it. I was disappointed with the flaws of the UN and the plight of the "lost boys of Sudan". A story of courage and hope. The brothers are now in America. Thanks to Judy Berstein for tellling a story we all needed to hear.

    Four Spirits: A Novel (P.S.)

This is a great book about racisim in the 60's. I've lived in Birmingham since 1980 and grew up hearing about the 16th street church bombing, Bull Connor's hosing and turning the dogs on children and adults. I read this book with great shame. I read some of it with tears running down my cheeks. It is a long book that carries a great emotinal weight. The chapters are about different chracters in the book, King, Reverand Shuttlesworth, the 4 individual girls, the men who bombed the church and more. Beautiful prose! Great history, sad, sad story! Great book for an Alabamian or anyone interested in Civil Rights history.

  • The Unheard: A Memoir of Deafness and Africa
    • Rated 3 stars

By the age of four Josh Swiller was deaf. His parents treated him no different than his 3 brothers. In his early 20's he spends two years with the Peace Corps in Africa. I enjoy reading about Africa and enjoyed Mr. Swiller's story. I enjoyed his sense of humor in some not so humerous situations.
