A room without books is like a body without a soul...Marcus T. Cicero

I am a nurse, CCRC, Mom, and NiNa to four grandchildren. I live in Birmingham, AL but hope to move back to the country where I grew up when I retire. I am ready for the simple life. I want to smell fresh baled hay, listen to the water flowing in in a creek, sleep with... more »

Welcome to the Good Reads group, Linda.

We are glad you chose to join us and we want to encourage you to participate in the discussion of the group read for the month of November, Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. Or, you might want to participate in our discussion for December. Denizen has compiled a list of books nominated in 2009 but not selected; we hope members of the group will review or comment on them. We would like to know what you think.

The profile should give you an idea of how the group works as well as a list of the books we have read. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a note.

I love a good book too! I used to finish every book I ever started, but I've since learned that life is short(er) and that there are simply too many good books out there yet to be read. So now, if I'm not 'captured' within the first 50 pages or so, I simply close the cover and put it in the pile to be returned to the library.

How cool about the research. We used to do clinical trials in the outpatient clinic I worked in. However, I took empathy to the Nth degree and am now home with NHL constantly battling bacteria/fungi/viruses. I too live a very simple life.

How far into "Little Bee" are you? I loved this novel, the characters (except for the civil-servant boyfriend). the theme, the setting, the narrative. Great story. p.s. I too am a nurse, oncology certified.

Thanks so much. One of my daughters (a member) told me this would be a better one, so I figured out how to change it, and -- voila!!

Absolutely, Linda! Also, I have so many books on my real and virtual TBR that I just can't stand spending my reading time on something that isn't worth it. Maybe I was just moody - but it certainly wasn't the right book at the right time!

    Thanks for commiserating!

    Hi Linda,
I'm glad you found it. I loved to Kill a Mockingbird as well. Great book, great movie.
I grew up in Florida and we spent a lot of time traveling through the south when I was growing up and I love books by southern writers or that are set in the south.

Glad to have you as a friend. I notice we have several books in common including The Hotel of Bitter and Sweet. I really enjoyed it. I too have read all the Maisie Dobbs books. I just finished the latest Charles Todd mystery that introduces a female protaganist, Bess Crawford, who is a British nurse during WW1. Looks like there will be future books in this series. You might like it since you enjoy Maisie.
