I see you are planning on reading Terry Tempest Williams and Abbey's "Desert Solitaire". You'll have a great literary trip through a wonderful part of the country (I lived out there 10 years and love it). Have you read anything by Craig Childs?

Hi! I see you have read Purge, and liked it! It's been a celebrity case here in Finland for a long time, you see, as it was originally written in Finnish by a woman who lives here. It got the main literature prize here, too.
I haven't read it, even if my daughter has, and she really liked it, too. I don't quite know why I'm not interested, but it's got something to do with the writer's personality. I find her behaviour and outlook so unintelligent and commercial, with that heavy make-up and the corsets she's wearing, that I'm convinced she really can't write!! Does this ever happen to you? My daughter says I'm just having a prejudice against her because of her looks, and that I wouldn't do the same to a man, but for heaven's sake: she curtsied when they handed her the Finlandia prize!! Women of my age would never ever do that.

thanks for the friend request....We have some similar books. PLEASE when you read Purge, let me know when you get to the end. There's a few things I didn't get at the very end, and a friend who read it with me is equally confused.

    Thanks, and enjoy!

You have an interesting shelf. There are man southern writers, Comac McCarthy (is he southern or western?), and then all the sociology stuff. Have you written a dissertation?

Thanks for the friendship invitation- it appears as if we have an author in common that we like- Larry Brown. From what I've seen, you have a cool shelf. I'll look at it in its entirety one day when I have time. Keep in touch!

    Hi!
I noticed that you, too, are reading The hidden face of Eve. I thought it's already history in Egypt, being written nearly thirty years ago, but recent news about the way women are attacked in the streets there make it very actual again. A very illuminating read.

    Hi Erica,

Thanks for recommending Larry Brown to me. Earlier I read DIRTY WORK and have just finished FATHER AND SON. He is a powerful storyteller and I can't wait to read another of his books.

    Hi Erica,

I read DIRTY WORK today. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. It is one of the most powerful novels I have ever read. And to think it was Brown's first novel. I don't know why it took so long for me to read one of his books but I can assure you that it will not be long before I read another one. I have a new favorite author.

Thanks so very much for your recommendation.

The siite is almost as addictive as books. I don't know why, but I haven't read any Larry Brown. What would you recommend as an introduction to his work?

I only joined a couple of days ago at the urging of my nephew. I had no idea how many books I should include on my shelf. I thought that I had gone overboard until I saw the wonderful selection that you had posted. I hope you do not mind that your shelf jogged my memory and allowed me to post several more of the books that are favorites of mind.

    Hi Erica,

Thank you for the note and request. What a great shelf you have here!
Im fact, I see a couple of books I need to add to my want list right away:
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down - also, Policing the National Body

Yes, we do indeed have some fab books and interests in common.
Looking forward to talking books and school with you!

    Cheers,

I have not read that book, and will look it up! I am reading "Hell hath no Fury" right now, and it is also a good cross section of the history of women in the military.
