Laris, don't you buy "Twisted River", I have a signed copy here for you, Cindy, and mom! It was a fantastic evening, am still star-struck and grateful for my good fortune. I took notes so that I could give you guys a good briefing :) Am off today with Jaime to Grand Portage (check it out, it's on Lake Superior at the very northern tip of MN) until Sunday.

Hey, Laris! Jaime and I are stuck at the airport in Boise and I am taking him on a tour of Shelfari. He likes your mug shot!

BTW, I love the cover of Irving's new book, don't you? I see you've already got it on your "to read" list.

You got it! Do you know what you did to solve it? I like the idea of reading each other's review, too. It gives a more personal touch to the shelf idea. I haven't been good about creating tags, and must work on more reviews.

Laris, I've been trying to figure that out, but so far have no idea how I set it up that way. Wish I could help. I would love to be able to read other people's reviews. I wonder if it has something to do with what you allow other people to see? In my profile, under profile shelf, I have chosen "Reading Shelf". What do you have?

We browsed Second Story, but were put off by the "high" prices when compared to Books for America. No one wants to fork over $7 for a book they can get around the corner for $3. We left empty-handed.

The flashing Santa is Augusten Burroughs' new book coming out at the end of the month. His first memoir was Running with Scissors which I believe we all read in Georgia. My hunch is the book cover was designed by Chip Kidd; he usually does Burroughs' covers.

Hi, Laris! Man, you and Cindy are reading fiends! That's good, of course. Your latest book sounds thoroughly fascinating; I look forward to your review. So I guess you didn't like Planet Walker? I have yet to start reading it. Now that I have finally put (almost) all of Jaime's and my books on the shelves, I realize we have enough interesting books in our own library to keep me busy for years. Take care and I hope to hear from you soon. Hugs to Cindy.

Absolutely, I'll bring it on my next trip to D.C. (which looks like it will be in September)! That is very exciting news. I am going to finish Mežvidus ļaudis and then To Catch the Lightning. Am enjoying reading in Latvian for a change. But, as of this week I also have a new project that will fill my down time - "baltie darbi", i.e. needlework for my tautas terps; now that I am marrried, I can't wear a vainags anymore and need new head wear. I just got back from 3x3 Garezers, where I was in the rokdarbu workshop and was able to get started on the project. It's pretty cool, I'll show you next time we meet. Vilis Zeps says hi.

BTW, just checked out that website and saw the fires/smoke in AK. Yowza! Brings back memories. Jaime had to turn down the invitation to facilitate the YRITWC summit this year - to be held in the Whitehorse area, no less!! I was bummed we wouldn't be going.

Hm, that's odd, I couldn't find him either. I thought the book was an entertaining read; a wacky story that, while at first you shake your head in disbelief, you just have to sort of take a leap of faith and keep reading. It centers around a small town on the Olympic Peninsula, the people and ghosts who live there. I enjoyed the characters and the author's sense of humor, too. I certainly recommend it.

It was quite a long flight. Two stops both ways, in Amsterdam and Prague, with several hours to kill between flights. I even had a few movies downloaded onto the iPod, and still managed to finish two books during the journey. Also read in the evenings a little. Luckily I enjoy reading! The Off Season came from Arnie, who joined Shelfari after I introduced him to it but I guess hasn't invited us as friends yet. When I left he was busily trying to construct his "already read" shelf. Perhaps we should invite him?

Pleasure to be here! I think this is a great idea. I have many books to add yet, the titles seen so far are from a quick review of our bookshelves. Some books still in boxes, though.

i'm not certain how i feel about your photo. i love the technique, but there's something disorienting and a little maleficent about it. it could be the basis of either a comic book hero or villain!
