I am married to my college sweetheart and am a former journalist and the homeschooling mother of four girls from toddler to teen and a baby boy. I am currently residing in the American Midwest, but I am still a southern girl at heart. I was raised in the mountains of Tennessee, North Carolina and Virgina, and that will always be home to me... more »

    Yep, and I'm completely stalking your bookshelf right now. I just downloaded one of the books on your to-read list. Original Sin (which sounds like the perfect light reading for right now) is 1.99 on Kindle right now (I don't have a Kindle but I can read them on my computer).

    Thanks! I'll keep this list and work through it. I read David's kiddy book on Martin de Porres Sunday, and that was perfect. HA! I also like to do my quirky prayer copywork where I actually write out a Psalm. Very relaxing and focuses my mind.

    Lisa, I'm like you. Technology should work for me, not make me work for it. It's dead-easy to get books for your Kindle... even through the library. It is also so easy to pick up where you left off. Whatever you are reading, it will stay on that page. You can even toggle between books. So, you're reading Books A, B and C. You can stop reading C and go back to A, and it will take you to right where you left off. I'll send you some more information in regular e-mails. Another bennie, it holds a charge forever.

    Lisa, Merry Christmas! And Happy Feast of St. Stephen! Despereaux is one you just have to read in that beautiful book form. Victoria gave me her Kindle. A relative gave her a Kindle last year, and she never used it. She gave it to me right after Thanksgiving. I am surprised how much I love it. A gentleman by the name of Michael Gallagher has a blog which lists all the free books available that day. Also, you can get Kindle books through the library. And Amazon has a daily deal. It was "The Hunger Games" that got me. I had it on the Kindle and then it came in from the library. It was a surprise to me that I preferred it on the Kindle. The print is sharp, clear and easily-readable. To top it off, you can adjust the font size. That's the deal-maker for me. Every book is now a large-print book. That, and not holding the weight of the book and not having the gutter. Enjoy your beautiful brood this Christmas Season!

    Love, love, love Despereaux. I read it aloud to the boys. Then JB read it. Now David is reading it. It's magical. The pages feel fantastic too. It's hard to explain, but the paper has a nice linen feel and the edges are bumpy, as though it were torn, not cut. It's a sweet, sweet book. Enjoy! Merry Christmas!

    Lisa,
    Thanks. The whole Twilight series doesn't tempt me. Ann Rice did me in on vampires years ago. It'll be good to read a review instead of reading them. I reviewed Harry Potter forever ago. Don't even remember exactly what I wrote, but it's there if you ever want to read it. Please do read... or try to read and review "The Golden Compass." I got through the first few chapters recently before I had to give up. It's oppressively dark. I reviewed that fiasco as well. Ha! I am enjoying "The Hunger Games" right now... excellent "potato chip" series. Happy Birthday!

    Got it! Or, if your mom is a quick reader, the library could wait for that one.

    "The Soul of the Apostolate" is such a good book. That's one of the few books Sr. Susan recommended even for prayer. Enjoy!

    The Crucifixion

    Sunlight upon Judea's hills
    And on the waves of Galilee,
    On Jordan's streams and on the rills
    That feed the dead and sleeping sea;
    Most freshly from the green wood springs
    The light breeze on its scented wings;
    And gaily quiver in the sun
    The cedar-tops of Lebanon.

    A few more hours--a change hath come!
    The sky is dark without a cloud;
    The shouts of joy and wrath are dumb,
    And proud knees unto earth are bowed.
    A change is on the hill of death,
    The helmeted watchers pant for breath,
    And turn with wild and maniac eyes
    From the dark scene of sacrifice.

    That Sacrifice!--the death of Him,
    The high and ever Holy One!
    Well may the conscious heaven grow dim
    And blacken the beholding sun!
    The wonted light hath fled away,
    Night settles on the middle day,
    And Earthquake from his caverned bed
    Is waking with a thrill of dread.

    The dead are waking underneath!
    Their prison door is rent away!
    And, ghastly with the seal of death,
    They wander in the eye of day!
    The temple of the Cherubim,
    The House of God is cold and dim;
    A curse is on its trembling walls;
    Its mighty veil asunder falls!

    Well may the caverned depths of Earth
    Be shaken and her mountains nod;
    Well may the sheeted dead come forth
    To gaze upon a suffering God!
    Well may the temple-shrine grow dim,
    And shadows veil the Cherubim,
    When He, the chosen one of heaven,
    A sacrifice for guilt is given!

    And shall the sinful heart alone
    Behold unmoved the atoning hour,
    When Nature trembles on her throne'
    And Death reigns his iron power?
    Oh! shall the heart--whose sinfulness
    Gave keeness to His sore distress,
    And added to His tears of blood
    Refuse its trembling gratitude?
