My name is Fran Lewis and I am a new author. I have written two children's books that I feel everyone adult or child should read. Both books are about a young child named Bertha who is over weight and kind of klutzy when doing sports activities or anything physical. She is not very pretty and gets picked on in school and at home. Her sister is... more »

A Journey well worth the Trip!

I have never been to Scotland. After reading, A Thistle in the Mist, I want to visit the Isle of Skye and see those thistles in the mist the author talks about. I also wish I could meet Meara MacDonald and her strapping young man Duncan MacLeod there. But they lived out their incredible lives in the eighteen hundreds.

Writer Megan Denby created an entire world in this novel, which I felt privileged to visit. From the start of the book, I was fascinated by time and place, and in particular the language of the Scots. What a lovely lilt that Scottish burr is! What fun it was to meet Meara as she sings a song written by the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns. Of course, she calls him Rabbie Burns! Don’t you simply love it when a writer knows her stuff? Yes, I’m one of those who checks. And Denby knows what she is talking about. From the colors of the MacDonald tartan to the claret our heroine’s father drinks. While I think of Scotland as being famous for its single malts, in the eighteen hundreds claret was as common a drink as milk.

As our heroine Meara goes from a carefree life at Duntulm Castle to heartbreak, sweet Duncan tells her, “Ah, lass, if I could take away the hurtin’, ye ken I would.” You got to love a sweet laddie like him! As Meara has to fight for her life alone while her man is away fighting Napoleon, she is sustained by Duncan’s love.

Will our sweet lassie get her hunk of a laddie in the end? Take the journey with Meara, Duncan and all the characters author Denby brings alive on the page. It’s well worth the trip.

When it comes to reading, I'm a beast. My library consists of a pretty strange and diverse collection. Like most bibliophiles, I feel the overwhelming need to own anything and everything that catches my attention--checking it out from a library just will not do. It must be sitting proudly on...

Reading is one of my favorite hobbies. Instead of trying to remember every book I've read, I just put one of each series from my most recent reads. Of course, I also included some of my all time favorites.

Obviously I am a writer and fortunate enough to have three best sellers on the shelves. I have two books coming in 2013 that I think will knock the socks off the reading public. Wait for Paradox in June, a romantic suspense, and yes, a man can publish one of those. It's difficult, but I did...

    Beguiled by 17th Century Venice!

I have always loved books that live in two worlds - the present and the past. Those stories bring home the fact of how closely we are connected to the people who came before us, and how their actions in the past still influence our lives in the present. And if you take this philosophy to heart, you will realize our responsibility as a people whose present actions shape the future.

The Glassblower of Murano is one such book that lets us travel back in time with the young protagonist Leonora Manin. She leaves behind an unhappy relationship and moves to Venice, the city of her ancestors, to build a new life. But it’s not a new life she finds; instead she finds the life she was meant to live. Following in the footsteps of her famous Venetian ancestor, glassblower Corradino Manin, Leonora finds her life’s work in that profession.

The author drew me into the mystery of the past as we get to know Corradino and care about his life. What is his secret? Is he a traitor, and if so, who is he protecting? Who are The Ten? Intrigue, murder, suspense – all of it kept me reading.

As I became completely beguiled by 17th century Venice, the present-day story of Leonora paled by comparison. Still, the Glassblower of Murano is a great read!

Elizabeth Strout is a lover of words. She uses the English language like an instrument, and in her hands the words become music. Mind you, her writing is not necessarily pretty; it's simply right on!

The book, Olive Kitteridge, is a novel in stories set in a small town in Maine as the writer allows us a glimpse into the lives of some of its citizens. The book comes together as a different type of novel by the appearance of the title character, Olive Kitteridge, in each one these stories. In one case, Olive simply drifts through the room to remind us that she is still very much the main presence of this book.

Mind you, the protagonist Olive Kitteridge is not easy to like, as Strout's writing is not everyday fare. If you are strictly a plot reader, this book won't get you there. Not that much happens! But if you prefer to read literature slowly, to let it seep into your thoughts and, perhaps even change your life, the way only a master writer like Elizabeth Strout can write it, this book is for you.
