I live simply by the sea amidst sand and sun with my singer-songwriter husband. We're surrounded by woods which give us the illusion of privacy and exquisite gardens. We cultivate our own organic herbs, vegetables and flowers, and meditate and relax in our beautiful gardens home to myriad flora and fauna. We create a faint carbon footprint. I am... more »

  • The Orphan Master's Son
    • Rated 4 stars

The Ophan Master's Son is both stupendous and awful, a tragedy in comic proportions - a glimpse into the craziness of North Korea, where reality is meaningless, loyalty betrayed, submission expected, and perpetual lies the norm. This reader highly recommends this incredibly imaginative novel, but beware, the descriptive violence is very uncomfortable.

  • Eleni (Panther)
    • Rated 4 stars

    Eleni by Nicholas Gage
This is a true story about Gage's mother and her courageous activity that allowed her children to survive a brutal civil war that resulted in her own torture and murder. It is a very heavy, emotional read weighed down with politics and descriptions of battles. Gage leaves no stone unturned in discovering the story of his birth along with his sisters', and his mother's life in a small Greek village near the Albanian border in the 1940s.

  • On the Wild Edge: In Search of a Natural Life
    • Rated 3 stars

On the wild edge by David Petersen
A story about a young couple who venture inland from Southern California into the Colorado Rockies in search of an ideal, living off the grid, well almost. The writing is okay, but the portrayal of nature is gorgeous.

  • How It All Began: A Novel
    • Rated 3 stars

Penelope Lively's How it all began (2011) is a light-hearted British story about the connection of things and people and how something inconsequential can cause a series of unexpected events to occur, like the butterfly's flap brings about a storm. Charlotte, an elderly independent, is knocked down in a mugging, moves in with her daughter, who misses work, and her boss calls his niece, who calls her lover - only the lover's wife gets the message.... Sit down and enjoy this afternoon read with a cup of tea and a scone.

  • The Oracle of Stamboul
    • Rated 4 stars

The Oracle of Stamboul is a wonderful fairytale of a young Romanian Jewess born to this world as her mother departs, and accompanied by mystical signs of her greatness. She is raised by an unloving aunt turned stepmother and when her merchant father plans a trip to Stamboul she secrets herself as a stowaway and her adventures begin. A fable, a story of intrigue, morality and sadness - all come together to create an absolutely adorable heroine. What a delicious story to be read aloud to a child. A real gem.

  • In the Woods
    • Rated 2 stars

In the Woods by Tana French, an Edgar Award winner was to this reader a droll, drawn out police procedural murder mystery that I kept with...hoping I would garnish some modicum of satisfaction from. Alas, it never delivered. I found myself wincing at comments, thoughts, behaviors and antics of the protagonist. I really don't know why I stuck with it to the bitter end.

  • Roger Williams and the Creation of the American Soul: Church, State, and the Birth of Liberty
    • Rated 4 stars

Roger Williams and The creation of the American Soul (2012) John Barry ****4 Star****
This biography of Williams though dry and lacking in wit is a stupendous one. The writing is clear, factual, well-researched, and clearly in support of an inspiring historical figure who shaped America's position in separating church from state and the spiridual ideology of belief and practice in god coming from a personal and private place. I am in awe of Williams and all that he did for this country in his selfless pursuit of an ideal that we can all cherish.

  • The Lost Steps
    • Rated 2 stars

The Lost Steps is an outdated novel about an insensitive composer who cheats on his wife, mistress and lover while he intellectualizes his pursuit of ancient musical instruments.

    Violent Earth

by Robert Dinwiddie, Simon Lamb, Ross Reynolds

The best book I've ever read about geology. The pictures are astonishing, breathtaking. The diagrams and models enhance the text for better understanding of the topic, and the statistics are impressive.
