Kate MacDonald

I am the daughter of a librarian. I learned to read early and I still read often. My reading tastes are eclectic: history, politics, science, true crime, and fiction. Although I enjoy my "guilty pleasures" like Sue Grafton, Agatha Christie, and foodie porn, I appreciate the chance on Shelfari to talk about histories, biographies and serious...more »

Kate: "All the King's Men" is one of my favorite novels! I've seen to movie versions of it as well, but didn't like either one of them. Do tell how you like the play!

I'm almost finished with "Brideshead Revisited" so I'm reading something for the England tag too! I've enjoyed it so far, but a bad ending is foreshadowed....I've put off reading the fast two chapters because I see it coming....

Alas, no points on paperbackswap.com at present, but I did post a couple of new books there this week. I sometimes purchase credit though, so I'll check to make sure I don't already have the Christie book in my anthology of mysteries. Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks for the buddy invite on paperbackswap!

I have to admit that I am a pack rat and keep the most I like the best if the ones I have are good editions, but I do occasionally post something you might be interested in.

Well, I'm well over 200 pages in my 700 page book (not 900 afterall); and I am now firmly hooked. It just took a while.......

Happy reading and traveling and all activities labeled "just for fun"!

So good to hear from you, Kate! Are you busy seeing those Shakespeare plays?

I'll continue to look for a copy of "The Book Thief". I have "Night" on my TBR stack already.

I just started "The Historian". A friend of mine visiting from Virginia Beach last week said I just had to read it. I'm not sure it is worth the effort though -- must be over 900 pages about a modern day Dracula legend. Hmm....I'm just 200 pages into it and wondering exactly what she thought was so compelling about it. I think I enjoyed Brown's demons and the Catholic Church saga more than I'm going to enjoy this one, but its too early to tell.

I've recently been into the classics again with "The Count of Monte Cristo" -- a first time read for me. And I just finished another Faulkner that is on the 1001 List, "The Hamlet". I enjoyed both very much.

No, no dragons for me either! I finished the TITTM game and left the group for a while. Maybe there are too many young folks into this dragon, vampire dark stuff to suit my taste right now. I'll check in with them for the October activities though, just to see where they go next.

I'm not sure I have heard of Stegner...., but the title sounds familiar. I'll have to check him out. And I know of several Agatha Christie mysteries I have not read. Must get back to them and some other light mysteries one day....

We should be buddies on paperback swap! My email address is jloucks@gentwood.com and my account is as it is here, jloucks. Please make me a friend next time you are at the site. We might be sending each other books soon if you do.

The weather is cooling here, too, not like there, I'm sure; but we take what we can get! I've actually started to garden again on a daily basis this week. Wonderful!

Thanks for writing, and please keep in touch when you have time. I'll go visit your shelf now to see what else you have been into lately!

Dear Charlotte, I do hope you'll join in the discussion of "Atonement" at AA - I see you quite enjoyed it, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

So very glad to hear from you, too, Kate. I would love to hear about the plays you are seeing! Mostly Shakespeare? You mentioned a Shakespeare Festival earlier I believe...

Sorry about the weather! It's weird all over these days, isn't it? It's really scary -- especially for those of us already living on the edge of livable climates like Phoenix and Hurricane Alley!

Yes, I do try to find books I would read anyway for the monthly tag and TITTM; and I always lean toward the classics. I have an overriding goal of trying to fill in the gaps of what I thought was my mediocre education in the literary field (and this from an English major!). Maybe I'm too harsh about that and should have gotten my MA in English as well to have gotten deeper into the classics, but just seems like I missed way too many! I did not get a course in mythology, for instance; and I'm trying to embrace it through my personal reading now.

I always keep up with your posts and shelves too. You do pick some good ones, and I always add them to my ever growing wish list. I loved "Atonement" and Ian McEwan's work in general. Glad you are enjoying it! Do you plan to see the movie? I often have no desire to see a movie version after I have read the book -- it's too often frustrating!
Thanks for telling me about "Part-time Indian". Sounds interesting! I'm getting into Steinbeck this summer and finding I like him far better than I did in earlier years -- selectively, at least.

Oh the places I would go if I could travel now! I'd surely go see Hyde Park this fall! Reading "Travels with Charley" is really giving me "itchy feet"!

    Don't be a stranger!!!!

So glad to hear from you! I was about to send out the search party!

Did you hurt your back or have a relapse with an old injury? I know so many people with back problems! Must be awful!

I'll look at your shelf to see what you've been reading.

Do you listen to NPR? I'm addicted! One of my major sources of information and entertainment.
