Trying to read more books of substance as well as light stuff to relieve stress at the end of a trying day. I'm always on the prowl for good finds at the library, secondhand bookstore and bargain shelves! While I don't judge a book by its length, I find tags such as "huge" "quick read" and "very short" helpful when trying to determine the... more »

    Sartoris

Very enjoyable for so many reasons! The first third of the book was challenging, as the book has more than one "John," and more than one "Bayard." It has always irked me that books, movies and television seldom have two characters of the same name. I see that as unrealistic. (How many Jims have you met?) I appreciated that realism in this novel. It very clearly illustrates the myriad of emotions felt by one brother who witnesses the tragic death of the other. I found humor in the way that only the Black or poor characters speak with a Southern accent. "Thayuh" instead of "their." Oh well, if that's the way the author heard it...

Just started this, finishing chapter five. Love it! Have to return it to the library. Just too much going on right now to finish.

the several chapters are depressing, but don't let that stop you. it's much brighter after she places an ad in a newspaper. the first paragraph of the preface tells how the book ends. what a spoiler! i was surprised at how suspenseful it becomes, particularly in the last third of the book. very enjoyable!

Silly little book for light reading. The author has some serious misconceptions about police policy, hospital policy and DHS, but ti IS fiction. Subplots.

Not really fair to slam this author, as it's just not my genre. Read this for a book group.

The main character can be summed up in three words: woe is me. This guy can really whine!

My sons can't get enough of this author. Now I know why. A step above the typical young adult novel.

This is a great book! I never would have guessed the ending. Left me wondering what happened next.

Loved it! Although it has a fairy tale quality, not everyone gets to live happily ever after.
